whoa take it easy on the caps buddy. there are many different preferences on what sounds best. i have a magnaflow catback and it is deep in sound and somewhat loud. i prefer exhausts to be deep and not high pitched. check out the offical exhaust thread on clubrsx.

i would do ur research man i mean ur about to spend like 500 bucks on an exhaust system. if i were you i would find out exactly what you want like the manifacture, does it go a certain db, does it pass emissions. you know things like that. i think u can go on you tube watch how some of them are set up and find out what exhaust systems some cars are running.

Good advice, especially about remembering to try to stay away from legal hassles.
Exhaust sound is like music, really. We don't all have the same tastes in music styles and bands, so we'll also have differing tastes in exhaust sounds.
Recordings can only reveal so much, too. I haven't yet heard recordings of a car just cruising down the block or on the freeway, either. If you can possibly manage it, start paying really close attention to what systems people are running at meets and randomly on the street. If you ever hear one and think, "Holy ****, that sounds good," (or "What the hell was that crap?"
), find out what it is, and write it down so that you won't forget later on.

Oh yeah, about race headers vs. keeping the cat...
Generally, a race header will be louder and raspier; after all, there's no catalytic convertor to muffle the sound. However, some catback systems may mask that sound difference more than others. If I ever run a test pipe on my car, I'll try to make some recordings to document the change.
