Erratic/Farting Idle after track session.
I need some expert advise, please don't flame!
I know there was a guy with the same problem in this forum a while ago but I cannot get with him to know what he did to diagnose the problem then. (I think he was drag racing and missed a gear hitting the rev limiter and after that his engine presented the same problem, that's not my case, similar though.)
This is the situation: After many laps, I went for my third session on the track. I went through the first turns pretty well. When I went for turn #7, or hairpin, I decided to downshift to second gear to get off the turn quicker but, my clutch overheated and began slippering loseing traction and making my engine hit about 8,500 rpm without touching the rev limiter and the same happened in third gear, so I had to finish the circuit slowly and after all these my idle is not the same. It keeps the idle but makes like a farting noise but ramdomly. It is only at idle. The engine feels as strong as before this happened. No problem when you give it gas. No nocking noises or valve noises. I don't think I bent a valve though. It is just that anoying ramdom farting noise at idle. Seems like an ignition or electrical problem to me. Has someone ever have an incident like this before and how did you fix the problem? Did I upset the ECU? Should I reset the computer? Read the codes if I have any? I'll appreciate some constructive info.
Thanks,
Eric - who's concerned about his baby.
PS: My car is in new condition. Nothing done to it besides Comptech Intake and rear section pipe.

If your engine hit 8,500 RPMs, it is because you downshifted when you didn't need to. And you didn't touch the rev limiter because there is NO rev limiter on downshifts - be careful. As for the farting noise at idle, I have no idea...check all of the connections in the exhaust system, maybe something is loose.
BTW, at my first track event I downshifted (heel-toe) a few times when it turns out I didn't need to...I saw about 9.2k on the tach (and mine is much more accurate than most), and there were no problems whatsoever (this happened about a year ago). Good luck fixing your baby.
Did I upset the ECU?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by your clutch overheating slipping and making your engine hit 8,500 RPMs...
He means he floored it out of a corner and his clutch slipped, which would make it shoot to redline faster than expected.

Ddub: That was exactly what happened...
Yes, this sounds a little more reasonable. Hope so.
Thanks guys
PS: and yeah, you can upset your ECU!

Check your plugs.
Best case scenario, you popped one.
Worse case scenario, it'll show the damage you did...

We agree on something it was a electrical related problem.
Actually yes, I popped one of the spark plugs (#4). I noticed it when I pulled them out and #4 was way darker than the rest of them.
These spark plugs were the infamous Denso Iridium plugs, which only last 5 months. What a waste of money! I learned it by my own experience
I went and installed my stock NGK ones back and voilá! The problem was gone!
Now my idle is nice and even like the sound of a tuba....nice I kept my good old NGKs. I wont chage them for anything else
PS: Good for the peeps with the valuable answers!
