Tranny Troubles.... HELP ME
specs
89 si hatch
b18a motor/tranny
has been fine for about 1 yr since i did the swap.
problem:
About a month ago it started getting hard to put my car in 4th gear, sometimes it would go in perfectly fine and sometimes it would act like i wasnt in the gear all the way i.e. grind when i let out on the clutch. then about a week ago it started to not let me put it in 4th at all like something was stopping it. NOW, after a night driving about 25 miles in 5th gear the whole time, i get off the highway and ..... no 1st gear. at the next stop light same thing. get to my buddies and park it, jiggle it around a little then first is back. well now a week later, im missing 4th, 5th, and REVERSE.
its all really sloppy, it seems like everything was moved over to the right side of the car.
read bold for short story.
ANY help or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Im thinking its a linkage problem.

thats something im wondering about. on the stabilizer bar back where it comes to the shifter, i tightened that down pretty far(kinda flattened the bushing). BUT, its been like that since i did the swap a little over a yr ago.

Replace your tranny. D series tranny cost about....100-150$ depending on how old. I beleive the inside of the transmission gave out on you.
We had the same problem in a YS1 with LSD tranny, turned out 3/4 hubs where grounded smooth. Vehicule had no 4th at first, but by the end, 3/4 where gone.
An easy way to check, drain your tranny fluid in a clear clean bucket. Look for metal peices, if not, put the tranny fluid back in.

im not d-series. I dont want to drop the $3-$500 on a good b-series cable tranny if its just shift linkage or possibly a bushing. i would think the tranny would have made a sound if something broke internally. also that wouldnt explain losing first and 2nd, then having them, and losing 4th 5th and reverse.
another thing i was think (after rebuilding a cpl trannys) is that 1st and 2nd are on a shaft, 3rd 4th and 5th are on a shaft, and reverse is on a seperate shaft. so how would all of them be comming and going if it was something internal.

It's still worth checking what the transmission oil looks like. If you see chunks of metal, you've got a pretty solid answer. If you see lots of metal shavings, that's probably the same unhappy answer. If there is little or no metal in it, then keep troubleshooting...
