instrument panel / gauge cluster install, fit
Hi,
My tach is no longer working in my '94 Prelude Si (non-VTEC). The shop has isolated it at the actual tach assembly, which is quite an expensive part to order new. I have found a cheap option for a used tach + speedo assembly from a '93 Prelude S, and I wanted to post a couple questions about this before ordering it:
1) Does anyone know whether the assembly from a Prelude S will fit a Prelude Si? There appear to be some subtle differences -- most notably the Si has LCD odometer -- but I'm not sure whether the connectors are the same in the back.
2) Does anyone have any experience or advice for replacing this guage set? Specifically, I'm wondering how to match up the odometer. Maybe it will be obvious / straightforward when I look behind my gauges.
Thanks in advance -
Hans

Thanks for the replies.
shutta: thanks for the offer - that would be a great deal. Unfortunately, my car is a manual, not an automatic.
I got a free '93 gaugeset that apparently works. If the LCD proves problematic, I'm hoping that I can take it apart and replace the tach assembly only in my dash with the one from '93 part. If it doesn't work, it sounds like I just need to find a newer gauge set. I saw one on ebay recently for $120, which is still a lot cheaper than the part new. 'Course, I'll give "free" a shot first!
Anyone have any tips / guidance for removing the gauges from the dash? It looks like I remove speaker covers and unscrew some upward facing screws under the lip -- and hopefully from there it becomes obvious what's still holding stuff in place.
Thanks again -

its actual called EL for electro luminecent... but id try to get the same one that ur car has... if not wanna trade harnesses? cuz im tryin to change mine over to the EL style
...
but anyways... be careful about buying them from ebay because alot of the people sell the jdm clusters on ebay and they will not fit the usdm cars. they never tell u that, but they are definitly arc'ed differently since the jdm ones curve for the right side of the dash.
clif notes: if u see kph for the gauge dont get it.

... I figured I'd post an update, for the sake of having a thread that might help others with this stuff.
After a bit more review of the parts, I see that this old ('93) gauge set is really not going to work as a replacement for my EL gauges -- thanks for the "EL" correction
It *appears* from the diagrams that the new gauges have a different wiring interface to the car. Also, the individual tachometer/speedo assemblies aren't the same.
I now need to find an EL gauge set online somewhere; hopefully I can find an affordable one on ebay.
I haven't actually taken the unit out of my dash; I've simply disassembled the '93 instrument panel that I have. I'm not going to remove mine from my car until I'm sure I have something that I'll be able to put back in there
It also appears to be essentially impossible to roll the odometer back on the mechanical '93 gauge set, which I'd want to do since the '93 gauges register 238k miles and my car has 115k miles on it.
Also, I find it extremely annoying that anytime anyone asks about how to change an odometer, moderators jump on the board and say that modifying an odometer is illegal -- and therefore the discussion will be prohibited. There is nothing illegal about modifying an odometer, as long as you are not committing mileage fraud. In fact, when replacing an odometer, it would be illegal not to make sure the new one matches the mileage on the one being replaced. Anyway, that's my .02 rant, since I was unable to find any helpful online advice for how to accomplish this.
Cheers,
Hans
