Default Deltacam 272 - wrong regrind?

Hi all,

I heard that the Delta 272 is supposed to rev all the way and make power to 7000rpm, no matter what I tune withe the fuelling , cam timing and ignition it just does not want to make power that high. If I have it pulling to 6500, it loses sooo much below 3000rpm and makes it an *** to drive.

I wonder whether the 257 written on the end of the cam got to do with delta giving me a wrong regrind?

Anyone?

Have you tried to contact Delta yet? If not, that should be your first step.

Got an e-mail from delta, they said the #257 is a part number and the 272 is the grind. also mentioned the 282 is not streetable.
The 272 should be good for 7500 rpm ...strange I cannot reach that high, power drops off at 6200rpm or so.

im making power all the way to 7000. you probably need the compression and flow for that. what other modifications have you done?

P&P cylinder head - DIY job just clean up and port match.
4-2-1 exhaust manifold + 2" 5-Zigen exhaust
K&N air filter
Head skimmed o.8mm
New pistons rings ( 195,190,190,195)
3 layer head gasket
iridium plugs

I heard lots of people making power to 7000 but mine is just not so, very strange indeed. I will keep checking.

A note on performance - how do you guys match up against D16Y and D16Z's namely Vtecs..??

What's your compression ratio? That's a fairly large cam.

My compression ration is around 10.2:1

Does it may any difference to the power band?
I would love to hear or see a dyno of delta 272 in a d16a6...

My guess is that you're not running enough compression to take full advantage of the cam. Maybe see if Delta can recommend a compression range? I'd think you'd want at least 11:1 if not closer to 12:1. Here's an example. My best friend races a dirt oval with a Celica and just had a motor professionally built for him. His compression ratio is in the area of 14:1 and his cam is a 280. The engine builder matched the cam to the motor.

Big cams need big compression to perform properly. If everything else is checking out, I'm leaning towards compression. The cheapest fix is a less aggressive cam or you can rebuild your block again with P29 pistons.
