Round 5 of the Honda Challenge series brought us to Willow Springs International Raceway at Rosamond, CA. The temperatures went well over 100F as anything under the sun, or under even in the shade, would start to boil.
Saturday:
Round 5 of the Honda Challenge series brought us to Willow Springs International Raceway at Rosamond, CA. The temperatures went well over 100F as anything under the sun, or under even in the shade, would start to boil. With sweat dripping off our faces, we got the car ready to go for practice. Everything went well in the practice and qualifying sessions as Edik qualified on pole with Jeremy in 2nd and Sam in 3rd. Edik was unable to find any traction on the standing start and was passed by Jeremy in the first turn. Edik stayed on Jeremy’s rear bumper and was able to get by him several laps later. While leading the race, Edik hit a dip on the inside of entering turn 2. It threw the car sideways and he went for a spin in the dirt. Half of the front-lip was torn off and the rest was bent backwards. This was bad news for Edik since the downforce on the front of the car was not there anymore. He fell to 4th place and worked his way to 2nd place passing Sam and Benny. Only one car away from Jeremy, Edik went for the pass exiting turn 8 and entering turn 9 on the outside but didn’t have enough room on the right side to move in, plus with no help from the splitter just slid off-track into the gravel. He started to go sideways, but was able to keep the car from spinning and got back on track. With a broken splitter and bent rim, Edik worked his way back up through the field again. Pushing the car as much as it can go, he finds himself about 3 seconds behind Jeremy in 1st place when the white flag is waved. Edik was held up in turn 2 by a slower car due to a yellow flag and was forced to not pass until the next turn. This did not help his chance of catching up. The finish flag dropped as they passed the finish line. After coming back twice, Edik came in 2nd place only a few car lengths behind Jeremy in 1st place, and Benny in 3rd.
Sunday:
We attended to the damage Saturday morning and got the car ready for another blistering hot day at WSIR. Edik qualified 2nd behind Ryan in Gus’s car and Benny in 3rd. The green flag dropped and everybody took off. Sam and Benny had contact before turn one, which sent Sam’s rear bumper flying off and land in the middle of the track. Before the black flag was waved, Jeremy passed Edik in turn one and was also able to get by Ryan to take the lead. The track crew removed the bumper from the track right away. The H1 lead car brought the whole field through the pits and back out to the track. Jeremy started to pull away and the cars in front of Edik passed each other. Edik waited until they came around for the green flag and then started to race. He was able to get by Ryan to take second place behind Jeremy. The red and black flag’s waved. Someone had kicked up dirt onto the track and created a big dust cloud in turn 9. Sam had lost traction going through turn 9 due to the dirt and dust and hit the wall. His safety equipment helped him as he came out unharmed from the incident. The track crew went to work and cleaned up the incident. Edik was dropped back to 3rd place since the timing and scoring computer crashed. The cars went back out onto the track. The race group went green the next time they came around. Jeremy’s car started to slide on him a little and went off track exiting turn 1. Ryan jumped into 1st place with Edik right behind. With only a few laps remaining in the race, Edik got a run on Ryan starting in turn 9 and edged by Ryan before turn one and held the lead to win the race. Ryan came in 2nd with Benny in 3rd.
It was another hard fought and rewarding weekend as Edik extended his lead in the H4 Championship. Next round will be at WSIR again, hope to see you there.
I'd like to thank our sponsors for helping us get out to the race track.

Racing in the desert....just doesn't make sense to me. You guys won't know what to do when you hit grass in September.

You mean there aren't signs that say, "Stay off the grass" at Mid-Ohio?

If you havent gone off at Willow Springs at 100+ going sideways in dirt and rocks the size of you head and hands you havent done it all. Grasss will be Childs play.
I will bring my mower lip for sure. And charge the track for trimming the bushes.

Who says we dont get grass in the desert?
There's nothing like watching bugs die on your windshield through turn 2 @ WSIR!
Once a butterfly avoided being roadkill and flew casually around inside.
Sometimes I get more insect kill on the doors than the glass.
