Default exhaust questions

Ive been thinking about upgrading my exhaust for a while and was wondering what I should go with. So far all I have is pullys, header, exhaust, plugs, wires, and a bunch of shiny stuff on my H22. So the two things that I have narrowed it down to was either buy a full Skunk 2 Catback, or buy a universal DC Sports muff ler and have a local shop weld it in with 2.5 in. tubing and a hi-flow cat. what do you guys think the bet bang for my buck? And also what does it take for an exhaust to be considered a "catback"? thanks!

Usually muffler shops can make you an exhaust for less then it is to buy one, and most shops include a lifetime warranty (look for a shop that's an authorized Flowmaster dealer)

but most shops use crush bending instead of mandrel bending and aluminized steel instead of stainless.

If you know of a good exhaust shop, buy a stainless steel tubing kit from a place like Kteller.com as well as one or two 14" resonators and a Magnaflow muffler. Then just get the shop to cut and weld.

Skunk2 is loud but it's a good exhaust and will net you a couple hp over stock. You can get them for $430 shipped on Ebay so the price isn't too bad.

by the way, a catback replaces the piping from the catalytic converter, resonator, and muffler. basically, it should bolt on to replace everything behind the cat. an axle-back system only replaces the muffler and a small portion of the tubing - it hooks up to the flange by your passenger rear wheel.

there are alot more exhaust companies than skunk2 and a universal DC crap one. Tanabe makes a few for the prelude that r in the 95 db rang and a couple that r in the 93 db rang. Also i know alot of prelude owners go with the odd ball looking (i personally dont like it) Greddy cat-backs or they go with an Apexi N1 or World Sport cat-back. HKS might make one for the H22 im not sure, cuz i havent really looked into them. I personally am running a Tanabe SMR one on my H23 and love it, its not too loud and its quite when it needs to be. I think the Tanabe's run around 600-700 or so depending on where u can get them at. U may be able to get the older ones for like around 500. But for cat-backs i say look to spend somethign like 400-800 give or a take a few. I could be a little off on this pricing but it should be close enough to give u an idea.

IMO, a kit from smsp would save you $ and you would be getting 2.5".

I wish HKS made a hipower for us 4thgenners. Its the best sounding exhaust in my opinion
I was thinking of finding a used RSX type S hipower and taking the muffler and resonator and welding into a custom 2.5 inch exhaust. I think it would sound nice.

luckily for you, all hondas sound the same when you slap an exhaust on. so if you can find an integra, civic, accord, crx, del sol...pretty much any honda with a skunk2, you can expect the same sound/tone on your car as well. there are slight changes in sound, but only a trained ear can tell the difference. if you don't believe me then find a civic with a skunk2 and an integra with a skunk2 and i think you will hear they sound very similar!

i personally have spoon n1 and i LOVE it!!!! i just welded the axle-back section the other day at my friend house and have a stock b-pipe. it sounds sooooo badass! i am working on pics to post and trying to make a vid to post as well. keep an eye out for that thread this weekend.

bkl5000, thanks for the offer but the skunk2 seems to be the exhaust for me. I did some reading up on it and no one seemed to have any complaints bout them other than how loud they were, plus its around the price range that I was looking at. Maybe Ill see you around fello Pa'ein. Off to the for sale thread!

On your other question there are axle-back exhausts and cat-back exhausts and then mufflers. Names are pretty much self explanitory about what they are. Catback is the muffler and 2 pipes that connect from the muffler all the way to the cat. Axle back is just from the axleback and is the muffler and the first pipe before the upbend to the cat. And well and a muffler is just a muffler. I would just take it to a shop and bend 2 1/2 inch pipe for ya and throw on a muffler. That's what I have and it sounds pretty good actaully. My main concern was I didn't want that raspy lawnmower/ricer sound and there is none. If your concerned about bending then get a cheap ebay 2 1/2 inch exhaust. As far as i'm concerned a pipe is a pipe is a pipe so intakes and exhausts are both okay to ebay. When you start gettin into header designs etc then it's time to anty because size and designs make a big difference.

I just recently got N1 headers and exhaust put on my lude. I love the sound. Only thing I can't do right now is go to a straight pipe til i get me a hondata. Might be a while.
