Default Audio Noob with Qs about Pioneer Speakers

Ok, so my Prelude came with pioneer 2-ways all teh way 'round when I bought it. One of the first things I bought was some 180w 3-ways for the back to upgrade it. Sounded a lot better, they could handle more bass and buzzed less than the original speakers. That was 2 years ago. Since then I've decided I need to go louder since I have no A/C and have to do lots of highway driving with the windows down, and my problem was once I went loud enough the speaker would start to pop unless I turned the bass down.

So I bought 4 220w Pioneer 4-ways, hoping that since they could handle more bass I'd be able to go louder than the previous setup without the speakers popping. Well, since these can go much lower and have more bass, the problem persists, and I still find myself turning the bass down for some stuff (I listen mostly to rock/metal)

Are my speakers popping at high volume because that's just phyiscally all they can handle, or is there something else I can do to let them go louder and maintain bass?

Also, i noticed when I put the fade all the way forward there's hardly any bass, and when I put it all the way rear there's a **** ton of bass. Is this normal of some cars? I would think it would be evenly distributed all the way around. Or did the guys who installed the stereo that came in the car (JVC KD-S550) wire it poorly?

I need some help and don't know ****, sorry I put so much in there, and thanks in advance

First if you fade your speakers to the back, They are going to have more bass because of the trunk acting like a box. Second, If I was you I would add a amp to your front and rear speakers. This will give you the add volume and bass. Your stock or aftermarket unit is not going to give you power that you need to acheive your goals. The reason your speakers are popping and distorting is because of the lack of power. Add a small sub to your trunk so your highs don't have to play the low end. And you will have a louder clearer sound system.

Add an amp as stated above. Will make a world of difference.

There are a few reasons why your speakers are doing what they do when you turn up the volume, and lack of power, [watts] is right at the top of the list, and if all you are running is HU power, then an amp will sure fix that.

A very close second is speaker installation and wiring, and speakers mounted on a rear deck with a trunk as a box can have better bass response then a speaker mounted in the relatively smaller air space of the doors, but if it is a huge diff., I would check the phasing of the front speakers, check by fading to the front speakers, then with the balance, balance all the way to the left or right speaker, if the bass response is better when only one speaker is on then when both are on, the speakers are wired out of phase, [out of phase speakers will give you poor bass response]. 94

Thanks guys. Last Night before I'd checked this thread I happened to be at a Best Buy and thought while I was there to ask about my problem, and I heard the same as you guys, to get an amp. There's one there I think i'm gonna pick up next week, hopefully that'll take care of my problems, and just 'cause it couldn't hurt I might get some dynamat to fill in the gap created by my deeper speakers, too.

Thanks again fellas
