testing the main relay is simple: turn the ignition to ON; the CEL will always turn on for 2 seconds, and turn off, with the relay emitting an audible click at the same time. if there is no click, but the light either turns off, or stays on for a long time, your relay simply isnt working. ive went through this bullshit with 4 different relays in two cars. i bought one from the stealership; it crapped out 2 months later.

if you know anybody who has a used relay, or a teg(or EF civic too) to borrow one from, then try putting that one in the next time the car wont start. since you mentioned it happens when its hot out, that leads me to be 99% positive its the main relay.
