Quick bit of background on the problem here. Trying to help a friend of a friend out that just bought a used 92 del sol. The battery was draining way too quickly after it was charged. I unplugged the power wire to the old honda factory alarm from under the dash near the fuses thinking that was the problem. That did not help.
I told her that she would have to take it to a professional since I did not want to get all involved in the electrical mess she had going on. She took it to some clown (that fixed it) and now wants to charge her $800 plus his labor for the "discontinued part" that he had to get sent overnight from back east.
I am hearing this story second hand, so maybe it is not all true. Still waiting to find out what this guy replaced, but my question is this, is there a part that has been discontinued for this car that would cost that much to replace? I am just thinking he replaced the alternator and is trying to rape her.
thoughts?

800.00 for an alternator and labor, no way, i had my 88 accords alternator done at honda and that was only 450.00. find out exactly what he replaced. and yes discontinued parts are a joke, like a cat converter, tryng calling for one for a 93 civic, thier like 500.00 or somethin like that.
I don't know about the part, but...
I believe anything the mechanic needs to replace over a certain amount they are required to call you and notify you how much it will cost, etc. So then you have the option to try and get the part cheaper yourself or take it somewhere else...I don't know, maybe they aren't required to do that, but it is def. the right thing to do. If he just ordered an $800 part without her consent first I don't think that is fair at all...

I know that the alternator can't be that much. I was just thinking that he replaced that and tried to charge her a truck load of money.
I told my friend to tell her the same thing about the authorization for repair. If she did not approve to pay that much and the guy fixed it anyway, she has a good case there too.
Just really anxious to find out what part he could have replaced for $900 on this beat down car that she only paid $1000 for.

iv known an honest one that will get the best price 100%(well almost) of the time....myself. i never take it to a shop b ecause there are so many mechanics that try to screw u over because of their slow business. i know there are good mechanics out there(the time i did have mine at a shop was when i was out of town). If anyone has a AAA membership, they have AAA approved shops that seem like they are good ones. but i cant say that fully because iv only been to a shop twice for my car. One for a dizzy that went bad on my 95 Nissan altima(out of town) and then honda to get my wheel stud changed(i got a little screwed but thats just hondas prices, i was about to go out of town and didnt wan to drive the highway a few hundred miles on 3 studs)

It just sucks that dikheads will take advantage of a chick that has no idea. Oh well, hopefully she has learned her lesson.
Beat down del sol with no AC $1000.
Fixing it with the discontinued Honda parts.
priceless

that seems soo high!
anyway.. do you have the service invoice? if so PM me so i can getthe information on what was done and ill run it by my dad who has been a service manager for like 25 years... he knows prices...
also, like someone said... the place has to call if the amount of repair is over the authorized price.
especially if she only got an estimate, they are not even allowed to start work on the car without a signautre or verbal contract...
did she know what she was signing.. did she sign an open ended repair contract?

Yea, I am just waiting to see the invoice too. Just having a real hard time figuring out what part he could have replaced for $900 on that car.
Thanks for the help guys.

a discontinued part? there's not much that is discontinued for honda's. and if there is (oem), someone usually makes it aftermarket, like in your local part store. if he was a honest mechanic he would have called her and told her how much it was going to run her and the nature of the problem.
dude, when you find out exactly what she paid for, please post up, i'm curious.

never take your car into a shop unless it's the dealership... even though they will rape you on price, **** gets done correctly and they are honest. otherwise, you can sue the expletive out of somebody. There’s not a price you can place on those. So only go when you need to…
I once took my car into a camp1320 recommendation and the dude screwed my bolt through my transmission casing. -Had to change my transmission- I had to silicon to keep from leaking trans. Fluid. Small ****, but i was like uh.. ok
I then took my car into AUTOLINK and they put on my KONI yellows in wrong. Spring perch was on backwards. And the funny thing is, they kept telling me it was right and CRXLEE kept telling me that **** is upside-down. They charged me regardless…
Now, instead of saving me time and money, I realized I wasted more time and money taking that **** to random places. I try not to be lazy or take it to the stealership. Still need to do my timing belt lol…
Note: read the bold…

check this site out. also grab a repair manual just in case, and remember to make sure the cam gears don't move after the belt is off, i wedge to punches in gears so the wouldn't move while putting on the new belt.
oh..since your there it's better to change stuff out like your oil and water pump. you don't want to keep going back and forth around there.
good luck!
