Looking for a high-sensitivity, low weight sub, ~500 WRMS, and a very lightweight enclosure. SQ & SPL are both a concern, as well as a strong, low frequency range. This would be in a sealed box.

I'd prefer a good quality 12, but if there's a 10 out there that'll slam right up there w/a 12 and provide similar frequency response, I'm sold. I'm trying to add as little weight as possible, and take up as little storage space as possible. The amp is under 5 pounds, so I'd like to keep the sub & enclosure under 20-25 lbs. if possible.

This would be going into a '91 hatchback. Anyone know if my 20-25 lbs. weight for sealed box & sub is reasonable? I like to feel it, but I don't wanna pay the weight penalty. Somebody let me know what my options might be.

Most quality speakers can weigh 20lbs buy themselves. But cheap ones will be less. An enclosure could add another 20+lbs depending on size.

 

as far as weight is conserned, just dont get a real nice one. The super good ones weigh more because of heavier materials and magnet. also look for ones that like small sealed boxes. I run a single rockford 12" XLC( old school by like 2-3 years) in a small qlogic sealed box. But, Rockfords for that matter respond better in small sealed boxes if you prefer that kinda sound. Tighter but not as deep and rumbly. I power that with a Rockford amp, punch 45 (even older school by like 4-5 years and wouldn't EVER get rid of it.) As far as speed differences or performance, i notice none, but there maybe be some slight difference if i was consistant and perfect at a track. But, for the most part when running on the street everyday there are too many other variables that that will change the out come greater then a single 12" or 10 for that matter. Just dont permenent mount it, that way if you wanna get serious and look for that little .1 second advantage at the track you can leave it at home, plus if you have to carry something large its easy to remove.

IDQ 12's are about 13lbs. Find your self the ultra light MDF, and build a small sealed box for it. Should come in at 25lbs.

 

maybe fiberglass for the box? my mdf box weighs in pretty heavy, i think 50 or so with the kicker 12L5. before redoing it was 70 lbs with 10 jl 10w6's. talk to someone about using your space tire well. that could help keep things clean and hopefully light.

 

i dont know about weight, but look into Illusion ND's, 10's or 12's. Their design also allows for installation in tight spaces. The SQ is suppose to be superb.

Ill second the IDQ's also, they are also suppose to be exccelent subs as far as SQ goes.

If you can get someone to fab up a fiberglass box, i say go for it. It will be more expensive than MDF, but worth it my opinion.
