Default new interest in old school's, i need your guy's help.

wutz up guys ive been into honda's for awhile now..but sadly i dont know much about the old schools i have a bunch of questions so im hoping i can get my answers from u guys. im looking into civic hb and crx's 90-91. by the way i was building an eg but because im only working part-time and going to school the build is taking forever (damn hydro tranny's are expensive as ****!)

here's what i have.

-b16 head, springs, retainers, valves, valve job, shaved.

-b16a2 bottom end that id like to use, but considering an ls bottom end.

-and a harness from a eg si.

here are my questions.

-can i use a cable tranny with the block that i have? (b16a2)

-i read something about clearance issues. which motors are these and into which cars?

-ive heard that there are problems with makin OBD0 cars into vtec, is this true and what can i do to solve the problems.

thats about it, at least for now. thanks in advance and sorry for making this so vague and having so many questions. thanks again

1. Yes, you can use a cable tranny
2. There is no real clearance "issue"
3. VTEC is easily accomplished with a Rywire or Hasport subharness...or you could just wire it yourself

The only clearance issue with the B series in an EF is the frame on the driver side needs a nice pounding from a sledge to prevent the crank pulley from touching, or you can get a CTR N1 crank pulley and you won't have too.

Second clearance issue in the engine will hit the front cross member, notch it or get a tubular one.

The only other clearance issue I've known is with an H22 with H2B for B16 tranny, the engine hits the hood at that point.

I've never heard of that one? maybe when using a ITR 4-1 header... ?

anyways.

you can use a hydro OR cable tranny. just get the hasport mount kit to match. (they make a kit that includes stuff to make a hydro tranny work w/ a cable).

don't use your eg si harness on the EF. stick w/ the stock harness and modify it to work. like some1 said, you just add a subharness for the vtec wiring.

Never heard of that. The engine itself will not hit the crossmember, an aftermarket header may cause a clearance issue w/ the crossmember.

Ooops sorry your right. That's what I meant haha. Any aftermarket header won't clear the cross member. Concidering he has a mediocre built motor, he more then likely has a header, and will need to notch that bad boy. Sorry, brain fart, coffee still not working good.

CRX is king ****, but if you are always with a small group of friend (3-4) you might wanna get a hatch for the back seat. I own a hatch, I want a CRX.

id get a hydro tranny if i was you.

1. more abundant.
2. u can swap it into your eg later
3. more choices.

if u get a cable trans you still need a b-series swap kit from hasport(or some1) for mount the b-series in the EF chassis.

either cable or hydro will bolt right up to the b-series engines (except the early prelude version). b16, b18, b20, b17 etc.

i have a crx and i like it alot, other then the fact that i smack my head on the headliner a lot cause im tall. the crx is fun and has great visibility out of the windows. but it sucks if you have more then one other person to take anywhere. you can fit a lot of stuff in the cargo area when the cargo cover is removed and the other piece is folded down. i like my crx, but i wish it sat 4 then i would be extremely happy.

JDM rear seats (although no one in there right mind would sit in the back of a CRX).

well i dont really care for the extra seats because im lookin more into performance, i got a daily driver. i had the back seats out of the eg already.

and crx_88 the reason i was asking about this was because i have to buy the hydro tranny for my eg. and its like 600 bux! and like i said man im working part time. so heres what i had in mind selling my eg buying a old school hatch or a crx, and a cable tranny. both the hatch and the crx are really cheap cars down here so those were my plans. what u think bro sounds good?

sounds like a good plan. Try to find a rust free civic/crx. The biggest downfall to the 88-91 cars is RUST. Look for ones w/ blown motors so u could get them cheaper.

a working rust free crx commands a decent premium. a dead rust free crx is a little more affordable.

here's an example of what mine started out, luckily i have a family member in the business so i got the work done cheap.

I would still get a hydro tranny. just because they have more choices.

Cable: jdm b16, usdm DA LS, usdm DA gsr, jdm integra (same as others maybe?)

Hydro: del sol vtec, 94+ teg (ls, gsr, itr), jdm civics of all kinds, jdm CTR, jdm tegs, 99-00 Si(r).

lots more choices (for gearing).

I have both, and I would have to say that the Rex is my favorite car.

and yes, it is slightly lighter.

If you have another driver, then by all means, get a CRX!!!

i can see your next thread now.

"which year/model crx to get".

here's some pointers.

lightest = 1988 CRX HF.
heaviest = 1991 CRX Si.

for swaps..

HF needs front knuckles swapped to DX/Si ones as the axles for a b-series swap wont fit.

DX needs MPFI wiring added.

So Si is the easiest swap canidate.

personally, i'd look for a 90-91 CRX Si, came w/ the better looks and rear disks from the factory. Cluters from a GSR/ITR swap into the 90-91 easier due to the OEM cluster shape.

good choice. i have a 91 dx hatch (jdm b16a) and i gutted it so i won't have to haul people around. the crx (imo) is sexy as h3ll and will give you many fun memories. also, why are u only working part time, im 17 and its summer vacation for me (mabye u have summer school or college) so im working 3 jobs at 80 hrs a week. summers not fun time, its a time to make money . but i don't know your situation. anyways good luck with your build.
