Default Everything else is just fine but this

Since I've been out of work for the past couple of months I have nothing but time on my hands. Today, I finally took apart the GSR tranny that has been sitting in my garage. It was a friend of mine who had it in his car. According to him it all functioned properly except for the fact that fifth gear would not stay in.(The only way it would is if you manually held it in) Also had leaking axle seal. He then replaces the transmission and sells me this one for cheap. I figured it wasn't too bad considering there were no other problems that were present. (i.e. grinding during acceleration or sloppiness) I figured he just was running it low on oil.

So I take it apart. I find that all the bearings are in perfect shape. The inside of the cases are almost spotless. All the gears look great for 90k. I'm thinking great, I'll just get an LSD and reassemble it. I then see whats in the pictures. This gear looks done. Nothing more I can say about that.

I'm curious, was this tranny run too low on oil on a long highway trip and this is what caused the gear to burn up? Why is it only this gear? Does it make since of fifth gear failure due to the rounded and pitted edges? I know I do not need to replace the bearings, but should I go ahead and replace the sychros? I need some opinions.

Resize the pics if they are too big. I do not know how.

ninja edit: Sorry for the shitty pics. I can take more if you can't see what I'm talking about.

looks hammerd to me. you might be right on with the low oil and long trip statement. But trannies have the worst lubrication in 1st or reverse, so who knows... if it were me, id replace that sucker. And i dont think honda sells gears. closest you might get is gear sets. so try and find a used one and chuck it in there.

I was thinking the same thing about lubrication. I also don't understand why it would be fifth if it's not even a "load" bearing gear. There is hardly any stress on fifth no matter what the driving conditions. I guess it happened anyway though.

no no!!! its no big deal!!

thats the reverse !!

on the countershaft (you have pictured) the sleeve shifts 1 and 2, on the mainshaft, the sleeves there for 3/4 and 5/R. notice when you took the trans apart, you took out the reverse idler, and the 5/R shift fork.

inspect the 5/R shift fork (the "bottom" of the contact points, as when you shift into 5th, the fork engauges downward onto the gear).

its totally no big deal. and to replace will cost you ~240 from the dealer. they sell it as a whole set, not just the collar.

but if you REEEALy want it gone, i think i've got an extra one ill trade.

they are dog gears, thats why you hear the crunch when you put it in reverse. no syncro.

the gears just slam into one another. just the way honda wants it i guess.

Makes sense. What about the fifth gear problem? Do you think its in the 5/R fork?

I'm gonna look at it now.

The forks look fine, as does everything else.

Clutch is fine and is not related to this type of problem.

sounds like you have a syncro problem with 5 gear. A quick test is engage the syncro into 5th gear hold the gear and try to spin the syncro see if it pops out of the 5th gear hub could also be the syncro spring
