Default B16, rough time starting, idling, sounds like crap.....opin ions

Brand new rebuilt B16, 9:1 pistons, took the turbo, chipped ECU and RC 550's off just to get the thing running and to the port so I can ship it.

Having a hard time getting this thing running though. I'm running pretty much stock everything except for the built block and head. This thing sounds like ***. Like a pissed off lawnmower.

I don't want to run it for any extended amount of time because I don't want to trash the new motor. Any suggestions and ideas are welcome.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm running an inlinepro turbo manifold on this thing with the exhaust downpipe having a turbo flange welded to it so I can run this thing without a turbo in otherwise stock form. Didn't feel like forking out cash for a header or a stock manifold.

TPS and MAP plugs are not switched.

Kind of a broad question but I'll try. What basemap is on the ecu? What ecu and obd? A little more info on the setup will help.(I don't need blueprints though)

check your cap and rotor. I know you said you completely rebuilt it, but are they in good condition? Plugs? Wires? Start from the easy stuff.

can you be any more specific than running like crap! check timing, make sure all sensors are plugged in, double check all the little stuff.

Check to see if the MAP and TPS plugs are swapped.

My bad guys.
Stock EM1 ECU. Stock injectors.
Cap and rotor are stock ones that came off the car when it was running the blown motor. I'm going to ASSume that they're good.
As far as running like crap defined....hmmm.....it sounds extremely rough. It didn't idle by itself. I had to tighten up the throttle cable to get it to idle at 1500 RPM.

Just checked the TPS/MAP plug thing. Not an option. I put the wiring harness back the way it came from the factory, and the TPS plug won't even reach the MAP sensor without really stretching it. But I managed to swap 'em, and now the car doesn't even start. So let's rule that one out.
How about a shitty valve adjustment? Would that seriously alter the way a car SOUNDS? I mean this thing sounds like it's idling extremely rough with an open downpipe.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm running an inlinepro turbo manifold on this thing with the exhaust downpipe having a turbo flange welded to it so I can run this thing without a turbo in otherwise stock form.

Well, gonna give a valve adjustment a try to see if that fixes it. Also gonna get a timing light to check the ignition timing, but I doubt that this is the reason it's sounding the way it does since when I moved the distributor from one extreme to the other, it didn't make in difference in how it ran. I have my fingers crossed that the valves are just so out of whack that it's throwing things off the way it is.
If anybody else has any insights, please let me hear what you think.

Just a thought maybe the sound and running issue has something to do with the turbo manifold/ no turbo. Cant imagine it would sound very good.

I'm in there right now. Just adjusted cylinder #1. The intake side seems to have been just a little too large, while the exhaust side was at about .011". About .003" over what the upper limit of the specs. I'm adjusting them to .007" intake and .008" on the exhaust side.
I'm also going to double check plug wires on the distributor. About 99% sure those are right though.

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!
Who guessed spark plug wires?? You were partially correct. I had a couple switched around. I blame that on the 18 hour wrench-o-rama I had when I put the motor back in.
Valves were off. Fuel pressure was running low as well.
Ignition timing was running to the point where the TDC mark was lining up with the timing arrow when I went to check timing.
So yeah, there was a bunch of stuff messed up, but she's running now. Just need to bleed the coolant now and get her out on the road to stretch her legs. Hasn't moved under it's own power in over a year and a half.
Thanks for all the pointers. Much appreciated.
