Car Died While On My First Date With A Hottie....
So I'm taking this girl out to dinner and we're half way to the sushi joint and the engine in my car (1991 Integra GS) just cuts out. So I coast to the side of the road. I had to leave it and call a friend to take me back home to my old Ford pickup.
All the electronics in the car work fine. The car turns over great. But it won't start. It's had the timing belt and water pump done 25K ago, so I'm guessing it's not that. Could it be the distributor? I hear they like to crap out around 200K or so. I called Auto Zone and they had a distributor in stock for $288. I'd hate to replace it and have that not be the problem.
Or maybe it's the fuel pump?
Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

Check for spark first..
Disconnect the spark plug wires from your spark plugs. Grab a metal screw driver, put the metal side inside the end of the spark plug wire, then put the shaft of the metal screw driver 1-2mm from a metal part of the engine (the top of the mounting point of the distributor) ,and have someone do a few cranks..
You should see a spark jump the gap. If not, then we'll continue

Car probably over-heated if she's as hot as you say she is. I know guys tend to over-rate their experiences though in a lot of cases.

I will try this tomorrow when I work on it. Thanks! If it does not have spark, do you think it's the distributor?

Dude, she's smokin' so the car probably did overheat. I suspect when I go back alone tomorrow to work on it, it'll probably start right up....

I was not going up hill.
I did try doing just that and I didn't think I could hear the fuel pump. In my Ford, when I turn the key the fuel pump is load as hell. And I used to own a VW Rabbit that had a loud fuel pump. But I actually don't remember ever really hearing the one in my Integra before so I'm not sure if I can hear it or not now. Where would the sound come from so I can concentrate on hearing it? Is it in the tank or on the engine?

What's an ignitor and where do I get one cheap? Is it attached to the distributor or is it somewhere else?

It's inside the distributor. Also called the ICM (ignition control module). you can get it at autozone or find a junkyard that has one. They range from $150 to 50 cents.
Sometimes they are expensive, just be aware of the prices of an ignitor versus a whole new distributor.

1991 Integra GS Hatch
1999 Audi A6 Quattro
2004 F350 Diesel Crew Cab
1974 Jeep CJ 5
Out of all of these cars in your sig, you choose to drive the 91 GS?
Don't get me wrong...I'm a true Honda-head. But if I had an A6...better believe that GS woulda been staying home just for the date.
Put your ear onthe middle of the back-seat and have a friend turn the key to the ON position. As soon as that happens, you will hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds. If you don't hear it then remove your Main relay and take the cover off and re-solder all of the points on the board and try to hear it again.
I did this last week to 3 of my Honda's. 2 being Accords and the other is a 91 GS as well. As soon as I did it to the GS it fired up just in time for the tow truck not to tow it out of where it wasn't supposed to be parked. lol

Valid point. However, the Audi is a wagon. And the hottie is my wife. At least I think she's hot...
It's the first "date" we've been on in a long long time as we have two little kids and few babysitters. As we were driving to the restaurant, I was bragging about how much I enjoyed driving the Integra I just bought and how reliable they are supposed to be and two minutes later it died. I felt like a putz considering we have two much newer cars at home and I choose to take her out in the Integra and it let me down. I just love the car and although it's not as fast as the Audi, it sure seems to handle better and is way more fun to drive in my opinion.

I've learn a trick to find out if its the ignitor only after going through 5 dizzies. i called the acura dealership and a technician told me to try and crank the car. when you do that look at the RPM needle. Its suppose to move slightly. The naked eye can see it. If it doesnt move then your ignitor is fried. If it does then i dont know what to tell you. this was done on a 95 gsr.

doesn tthis mean he should have a tune up?..
check the dizzy cap for corrrosion on the metal studs on the inside. and check your rotor bug for corrosion and wear also. if those are both rusted out and nasty lookin change those for your best bet.
and should he change out fuel filter and all that good stuff too?

Ha!
Had you guys fooled. If and when you get married, make sure your wife looks good because forever is a mighty long time. I'm sure I'm way older than most of you guys on here (36) as is my wife (34).
Thanks for all the advice. I'll keep you guys posted as to what I figure out with the car.
