Default Fed up with non DIY.

I recently got my transmission replaced after about 2 months of not having a car. I'm tired of paying for all this labor when I'm definately capable of doing it my self. I live in a apartment which is the biggest problem (no place to work). I want to learn how to swap engines and transmissions, but I keep forking over cash to get it done.

How did you guys learn what you know? When was the turning point when you decided you wanted to do everything yourself?

When you don't have cash to fork over. you don't.

Seriously there is more than enough info on this site and the internet to get you through any swap. Just research what it is your doing.

You just have to jump in head first

Make friends with other honda folks in your area and make yourself available to help them work on cars... even if you've never done a swap before, you can show up and help clean the crud off parts and watch the whole thing happen, and before you know it you'll be under the car helping put things back in order.

I just started the second I started modifying my car. I figured I'd pay for regular repairs and stuff, because if it breaks, it's on someone else's shoulders. When I started ******* around, all the work was done by me for me with me held accountable. It all started so long ago with my LS rear discs.....

Started researching the dohc zc swap on this forum back when i was 17. And decided i could do it myself. Needles to say it turned out pretty good. Im now 22 and have done lots of my own swaps and alot of swaps for friends.

I know how it is living in an aparment and working on cars Just try to find someone that will let you work on the car at their house.

My brother thought me what I know. In our town he's a Honda King. He's new engine will produce alot of jam.

First swap I did I was 14 and I help my brother swap a DOHC ZC into his civic, that was 5 years ago. I helped him swap a KA24 into a 240sx, and since then, I've been learning/doing/helping. Eventually, you know how to do alot. I didn't know how to do an MPFI swap until I did mine. I had no need to before. Everyone either had an Si or had something newer haha.

Oh I'm done work!

It was about four years ago for me, when I had to shell out $1600 for a new transmission and replacement. I started small and worked my way up to building and swapping a motor.

It all changed for me the day I got my condo with a 2 car garage. I rarely pay anyone to do work for me unless its something I dont understand or done want to touch (aka drum brakes).

Find some honda people in your area with a garage. A case of beer and a lil cash goes a long way. Truth be told, a lot of people enjoy swapping engines and wrenching. Make friends with those people.

reading. thats all you need.

if you have half an attention span to read about what you are going to do, be it on honda-tech, a helms or honda manual.. then it will save you hours, days of problems.

there is NO replacement for hands on experience, but when you dont have anyone else who knows what they are doing, reading about it is your best option.

my roomate has a problem in that he doesnt read up on something he is about to do, and that is why i found him in the garage the other day with the engine from his 91 crx si out of his car and a large chunk of the engine wiring harness CUT out and laying on the ground because it was "in the way" and the idea in his head he wouldnt need it because he is getting a b20 with the harness anyway. this is the same roomate for whom i made a thread entitled -13° and 7000rpm = hole in engine block.

i guess what i am trying to say is that, with any big project, simply reading about it first to the point where you have answered all the questions you may have first can save you a lot of headaches in the end. honda-tech is a good resource most of the time. if you can read the same thing about the same subject 3 times in 3 different threads, there is a good chance it is true.
