Default new to forum, a few questions

hey everyone. i am currently the proud owner of a 1990 CX Hatchback.

i have a few questions though. all of my previous civic experience has been with my 93 Si hatch and an 89 LX sedan... both of which i no longer own.

so the CX is the same as the STD right? mine is all original and has a factory 5spd manual tranny and a 16 valve engine.

i thought the d15b1 was 8 valve and came stock with a 4 speed tranny? or am i mistaken? i've done multiple google searches and found a few more people who are just as confused on the issue as i am.

the car is in perfect shape. it looks to me that the right front fender was repaired or replaced at one time, as it is majorly faded from the sun *a single coat of enamel, so a cheapo body shop job* but the body/frame is straight and it runs extremely well.

the only issue i have seems to be the throttle cable which is common in ef's i guess. my 89 used to stick really badly and i'd have to put my foot under the pedal and 'pull up' to stop it from revving.

also i lost about half a quart of oil in about 5 weeks. not sure where it went... there are no spots in the driveway and its not blowing smoke...

gas mileage isn't what i'd call incredible. its definately great, but not what i expected out of a STD hatch... it costs me 32 bucks to fill it, and i got 507 kms out of the tank before i could feel it running on fumes. i thought i was getting closer to 650 out of my LX but its been a while.

all in all, its a fun little car and with the right engine, could make a nice sleeper. in the mean time its my daily driver, no rust, perfect glass and the d15 is running strong.

so can anyone recommend a few simple mods to give me a little more response out of it?

thanks!

-Andre

The cx is basically the canadian version of the us std...

THe D15B1 is 16valve and comes with a 4spd tranny...

1/2 a quart of oil in a month is about normal for hondas with more then 100,000miles...No worries..

For more power/response do a mpfi conversion..

thanks for the info. it came with a 5spd from the factory though. i'm the 2nd owner and the girl who had it before me definately didn't do any mods to it.

she was one of those 'band camp' girls.

a lot of people keep trying to tell me that the d15b1 was 8 valve... but mine is definatley 16.

thanks again.

if it has a 5 spd it would be a dx or a swap, they didn't come with 5 spds stock.

Check your block code just incase. Yes they are 16 vavlers too.

ps what did she do at bandcamp

its definately a CX... has no center console, 1 mirror, black bumpers, ect... and the original paperwork says 5spd on it... this is why i'm confused. i'd be happy if it was a swap, because 70hp is pretty sad. it doesn't feel like 70hp though, but i could be wrong.

where can i find the stamp on the block? i looked earlier, but had no luck. my old Si had it in plain sight, this D15 is hiding its identity from me...

and i'm not sure what she did at band camp, but she made me a tromboner...

Your stamp will be in the same place, DXs could be really low opt too. Just my guess of now.

Try digging out a gear cacl and finding the tranny ratios then you can easly find out what has happened with your car.

Your CXs up there had badges didn't they does yours have one?

yea it does have the CX badge on the back. but i knew a guy who had a CX and his was 8 valve... i think thats why i'm confused.

when i ran the VIN on carfax it said it was a CX as well. 1.5L L4 FI. not sure what the L4 means, but the rest works.

its also got the dual point injection... so it must be a d15b1, i'm just not seeing it.

i found the stamp! it was on the opposite side my D16z6 was on... i think anyway...

and it says D15B2.

so does that mean it is the same engine as the DX with even less options? lol

i didn't think they could take much away from the DX and still leave you with anything. :D

thanks for the help! now i need to know what to do to this engine.

If its a b2 sounds like you have a DX maybe mis badged or swapped?

either way MPFI is your first step power and or econ wise

thanks alot for your help! i tried to reply earlier but it said i can only post 5 times in 24 hours? meh.

i called the dealership and asked them about it, and they said that in Canada, the CX is basically a stripped down *option wise* version of the DX, but has the same engine as the DX.

the guy i spoke to wasn't even sure if you could buy an actual STD up here.

so i guess thats ok. much better than the 70hp i originally thought it could have.

i think first i want to do some suspension upgrades. it handles well, but it could handle better. the MPFI is something i'll do as soon as i can find one in a yard somewhere.

so what will that do for me exactly? is it just better responsive-ness or is it gains in actual numbers, like hp or torque?

and i think i need a throttle cable... idles funny sometimes, like an up and down kinda thing... only when its hot outside. :D
