aftermarket crank pulley worth it?
As I was driving the other day, i noticed my battery light came on and then a high pitched sound...scared the crap out of me. When I checked under the hood i saw that the crank pulley fell off. The car is at the shop now and I'm contemplating if I should buy a lightweight crank pulley from Unorthodox. I have a Z6 in the CRX, is it worth installing or should I just stick with the stock one?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Mixed reviews on light weight crank pulleys...a lot say they are fine and other say they ca cause bearing wear and failed oil pumps...i personal believe since the bottom end is balanced from the factory is you change either crank or flywheel weight you should have the motor balanced...I'd say save your money, not worth the amount of power it will add

I've had one in my zc for several years now. As long as you're comfy with there being a possibility (very small, imho, but others will disagree) of a serious problem down the road, I think it's worth it. Life's short, and there are no guarantees, etc.
Thanks for the feedback. I think most people feel that the money spent is not worth the performance gain, if any. I'll stick with OEM and save the money for the greddy turbo I've been eyeing.

what the hell? you have to buy a pully anyway, right? Those lightened, underdrive pulleys from ebay are cheap, so I don't see why people are saying to save your money... I'd go for it, but you will likely need new (longer than stock) belts because the underdrive pulleys are a larger diameter.

I have done so much research on the CTR pulley vs. OEM pulley and that seemed to be what a majority of people said. It came down to NA engines dont produce enough stress to make the oil pump and bearings fail prematurely but on a boosted application they were killing engine much faster. Not sure why but you cant go wrong with OEM.

Stress how?
In some ways a N/A motor will out stress a turbo motor with 3times the HP.

honestly i couldnt tell you but it seems that the boosted engine will blow up very fast with aftermarket pulleys but last no problem on an OEM one
I figure that I should share this with you.
Car came in with alt/battery light on 97 civic. Figured it was the belt so I open the hood and the pulley is off the crank and just sitting there.
Here is the worst part it broke the crank. about 1" of the crank is still attached to the pulley.
Stock 1.6 OEM pulley
Time for a new crank???? yes!

The underdrive crank pulleys are smaller in diameter. I got a belt that was 2" inches shorter and it worked great.
