I was always under the impression that stock cams were great for turbo because they are pretty strong.....

they are, you can make 500+whp with stock cams, and they wont break like aftermarkets

stock cams work great for na, and for a stock motor
there have been, many motors making well over 500whp with stock cams, there is no point to get aftermarket cams unless you want to lose reliability, and gain a few hp, same with cam gears you lose reliability but gain a few hp.
it depends on you if you want a reliable car..
all you need is some good valves, a 3 - angle valve job.. and your set
just incase you dont know, but valve guides are stock and u should already have them in your head, if they are leaky or loose, then youll need to replace them which your builder will determine that for you.
