So the other day I noticed that after stopping the car there was a noise coming from under the hood. I popped it and the coolant reservoir was "boiling" I took the cap off and it was just hot steam coming from the hose (coming from radiator) There was a lot of coolant in the reservoir, like almost to the top. Now everytime I stop the car it will do this and "steam" for like 5-10 minutes and leak lots of coolant out (from the cap being under pressure)

Anybody heard of this happening? What could be the cause? There is no overheating whatsoever

 

your thermostat is bad, change it out and you'll be fine.

 

Is it really? what is happening with it? Is it stuck or something?

Thanks philosofy, I bought the thermostat at honda for $25 with gasket and on my way home the damn thing overheated BAD. So bad the check engine light came on. Well, today I replaced the thermostat and it still overheats after reaching normal operating temperature.

There is no more bubbling coming from the reservoir anymore, tho, so that's one down.

One thing I noticed, the fans didn't come on at all. Fuses are fine but I'm thinking relay. My laptop is broken right now and I don't have access to my PDF helms, can anyone tell me where the "Fan Relay" is located?

 

did you try burbing the system after changing the thermostat.

as for the fans, how long are you waiting to see if they come on. oddly mine take a while to kick on in my 93 hatch.

 

i know when you don't let all the air out of the system it'll still overheat at running temps. let the car cool, open the radiator cap, start the car then add more fluid until you can't anymore then put the cap on and see what happens.

 

are u using 50/50 or pure anti-freeze? If 50/50 might wanna add more on the anti-freeze side.. Realistically though it sounds like there's a blockage in the system..but how long are you letting it idle that your fans aren't kicking on? If you're driving air cools it so there's no need for the fans to be on, so if you're driving and then you stop and pop the hood, the fans shouldn't be on, but then let it sit for a few and the fans'll kick on... If ur sure it's not kicking on the relay could be bad I guess...but it really sounds mor elike a thermostat problem, but u said u changed it so how could this be? Check ur mixture, check ur thermostat AGAIN, and thn I would move onto ur hoses, because it seems like there's a block or something..but even that's doubtful :-\

Thermostat was replaced with a dealer one. (doubt that is the problem) Try burping the system as philosofy said. If still that doesn't work, replace the cap. It might not be venting properly. Mixture is not the problem. Fans are supposed to cycle regardless of driving or not. I doubt there is a block in the system.

 

Oh i see thanks guys. Yea I reach normal op. temp. and the fans didn't kick on. So I decided to open the relay box (under hood) and switch the 3 relays around until they kicked on. So I think it's the relay.

I will go burp the system right now. I've been waiting for it to cool down. It's 105 degrees out here right now

edit-what are teh 3 relays in the relay box? I have no labels. I know one is for the fan, one for the blower motor and the other one????

 

If you have a 95 civic, then the cooling fan relay should be taped together with the condenser fan relay located in between the bumper and the condenser.

 

I searched and people said the relay was in the fuse box. IT DID work because I switched them around and they turned on when they were supposed to. I will go look at it right now. I burped the system and the hose isn't steaming anymore

The cap had a little metal ring inside of it and that was done for. It was all loose so I might have to get a new cap too. $22 at honda.

OK EDIT- When you open the relay box, there will be 3 black boxes, lined up vertically. This is the order from top to bottom:

1. Cooling (radiator) Fan Relay
2. Heater Motor Relay
3. Rear Window Defogger Relay

Now near the driver side headlight there are 2 more relays. They are the Condenser Fan Relay (for AC) and the A/C Compressor clutch relay.
