Stereo Mounting kit not fitting in 97 Prelude
Hey all,
I have been trying to fit a mounting kit in my 97 Prelude for a few days now. I have the METRA - 99-7898 mounting kit.
No stereo was in my car when I bought it. The guy I bought it from said it was stollen.
I know that I can follow instructions well, but there is absolutely no place inside the space to screw in the mounting kit. I see four holes, (2 on each side)but none of the brackets can fit these mounting holes. Even when I put the mounting kit up to the console cover face, I can not get it to fit flush with the dash board.
My question is, is there some sort of 'L' shaped bracket that needed to be in the car so that I can screw the sides of the mounting kit into? The mounting kit tells to use a certain bracket, but the screws are in a different geometric plan than where the car has holes for screwing it in.
What am I doing wrong?
If there is a bracket, where can I get this bracket from?
Thanks for all who read.

most kits use locking tabs with no screws that pop into place, I'm not aware of how the specific kit you bought works, you may consider buying a different kit though, they usually sell for no more than 14 or 15 bucks
This is the second kit that I bought. I bought a scoche (spelling?) kit before. I took it back to circuit city and the guy offered to help put it in, but he says that something is missing. Do you guys know what is he talking about?

all the prelude kits I have put in have used the locking tabs. Maybe the pieces that were missing were for the iso mount, you aren't using the iso mount are you?
when you remove the OEM head unit, you take out a plastic/metal frame with four screws. then you unbolt the headunit and dash pocket from that frame.
your dash kit from Metra should clip into the OEM frame. No screws. you'll need to remove several of the platic tabs with a knife since its designed to fit multiple Hondas.
I have a Metra kit that I know works (had it in my 2001 briefly with a Clarion head unit) that you can have for free if you pick up or pay shipping. I also have a brand new wiring harness for pre-1999 Hondas that's yours if you want it.

Thanks alot for the offer. I think that metal frame that you are talking about is what is missing from my car. Is it only two 'L' Shaped brackets? or is it an actual frame that goes all that encloses the radio?

The part I think missing from mine is #5, #6. I do not have those pieces on mine.
Since you have been talking about frame, I looked and I see that I do not have #8 either. Is #8 the part that you are talking about that the radio should clip into?

#s 5, 6, and 8 compose the head unit "frame" I was talking about.
how did your car not have those? did you buy it with a big hole in the dash?
edit - reread your first post. yeah if it was stolen they probably just ripped the frame right out of there. hopefully those parts aren't too expensive.

lol....yes, I bought it with a big hole in the dash.
In fact, it had alot of electrical problems with I bought it. I found out after that it was just one fuse that was out that caused the entire electrical system to go coo-coo. Its fixed now, but my check engine light and my ATTS light came on recently. I need to check on that soon as well.
Thanks alot.

Hey, I will pay you the shipping cost for it if you still want to get rid of it...that is if profroopchan doesn't want it.

you can have it. I think mine should work when I get the brackets. good luck with your install!
