Default Stage 2 cams quick question

Getting ready to have a set of skunk stage2 cams installed in my GSR motor along with a set of valve springs/retainers and a set of adjustable cam gears to tune them. Anything else anyone would reccomend me doing while I have everything taken apart? Would I NEED / HAVE to have a new set of valves to go with the springs/retainers as well? Or would the stock valves be okay?

Stock valves will do fine.

The stock valves would work fine, but you will need to adjust the valve lash.

Okay cool, thanks guys. And then another question popped up regarding the right cams to use.

1. Stage 3 would be too harsh for a daily to stay in good shape over time?

2. Jun/toda stage 2 would be worth paying more for than skunk stage2? or would I just be paying for the brand name?

For a Stage 3 to work Im going to say that you will need major engine work for everything to fit properly (and not have clearance issues). I would stick with a stage 2 unless you want to build a race motor.

as for the jun/toda Im not really sure about if they are better than Skunk2. Two things that are true for any motor.

1 bigger cam doesnt mean more power.
2 tune it, tune it, tune it.

Right now It's stock 10:0:1 compression (B18c1 US motor)

Right on, thanx man. I would agree I think I'll stick with stage 2 cams that way I only have to worry about valve springs and retainers. And then basically you just have to adjust the valve lash and make sure you tune the valve timing with the cam gears and should be set to go?

I'm almost positive that the stg2s are stock valve lash (.006 intaje, .007 exhaust)

10.0: 1?!!?!

You shouldn't even be using Stage 2s. You should be using Stage 1s.

You need to up your compression before you go with the Stage 2's.

Oh damn, alright. So basically im going to need to invest in some higher compression pistons, I didnt think I was going to need to invest that much money. Would I be able to tune some stage1 cams to make some decent power?

If you plan on using Stage 2s yes you def want to up the compression. I would go either USDM/JDM ITR pistons.

But IMO Stage1s would be better. Recommended but, you don't have to upgrade valvetrain (as long as you keep it under 8k) And you'll make decent power with a mostly stock motor (as long as you get it tuned well)

Sounds good, I think I'll get some stage1's then since its my daily, plus after that's done I can go ahead and upgrade the Intake mani and throttle body and header to release a bit more power. Interested to see how much power this can roughly make. Should be fun.

good luck with the build, just start reading/hanging out in the All Motor forum. I learned a lot just by browsing around and looking at peoples build ups in there
