Struts...???
Lots of things.... The more expensive ones often are better built than the super-cheapies, so they tend to last longer. They also usually have had more attention paid to the actual shock valving, and an effort has been made to get valving that really works with a car's spring rate and weight and so on.
Finally, a lot of the higher-end shocks are adjustable. Either in rebound, or in both bump and rebound. That gives you a way of tweaking the car's handling to some extent, which is important when you're autoXing or on a road-course. Not so important when you're on the street, but then it can help you to fine-tune the car's ride/handling trade-off to where you like it.
