Default Radiator cap for Koyo

I just installed a Koyo radiator (1979) in my 96 Lude. The stock radiator cap doesn't fit. Any suggestions on which cap I should buy (that will fit)? Thanks for the help.

hu: i got a koyo perf (r1979) rad on the way for my 92 jdm swapped lude - i saw you mention in another post something about the drain not fitting by the front crossmember... could you possibly post some pics of your install? how you got around that, and any other brackets you had to fab. personally i think it's retarded when you buy an aftermarket part for 300 bucks and it doesn't fit it's proposed application - but that's neither here nor there, and i'll have to deal with it when it arrives. if i have to fab too much koyo will get a nasty email from me.

I just fab'd one side of the upper mount(drilled 2 new holes), when you drain the rad, you'll have to remove it to unscrew the drain plug. As far as the cap goes, I went w/ a high-pressure cap from Mugen...looks pimp.

I would post a pic, but the front crossmember is gone. I am awaiting my PFI traction bar. Most people simply sand or cut the plastic drain plug down.

The Koyo does not fit the stock radiator supports at the bottom. You have to get a steel cutter and remove part of the support. Its easy to do. I will take a pic and show you what I did. Give me a day or 2. I didn't have to make any brackets.

The Koyo is so thick and wide you will have to make a cut on the stock radiator support.

The right side.

The left side.

The drain plug that you will have to cut/sand down. It will not clear the front crossmember.

sorry it's taken me a while to respond... thanks for the pics - much appreciated.

I see the cuts to those mounts - looks not to bad - however with that drain plug - when you say it needs to be cut down - do you mean the ears off the plug itself? (you do say the "drain plug" or is it the actual bung (fitting) has to be cut back (yoikes!)... so retarded they make something specific for a car that doesn't bolt right in. ahh gotta love it tho.
reckon i'll install it this weekend.

thanks again.

oh and one more thing.. find a cap that works? I thought i remember hearing about any d16 rad cap would work? can't find the post now.

Just part of the plastic drain plug should be trimmed down.

I am still working on a radiator cap.

hey hu... just an update -

got a jump start on installing my koyo rad tonight - suprisingly i didn't have to do ANY cutting.

I think you must have forgotten to transfer the rubber bump mounts from the bottom of your other rad over to the koyo (?) (in fact from looking at the pics it really seems to be that way, because your koyo lower mounts protrude right thru the bracket!)... in any case - my koyo sits in the stock lower brackets just fine when the bump mounts are installed, without the bump mounts i could see how there would be chaffing, and incorrect seating. at the top i didn't have to adjust either of the brackets... altho they were a tight fit to make stock hole locations (;

the fans: the a/c fan fit in, it was a jam - as i still have my a/c hoses and stuff installed (even though a/c don't work) - installing it - i got a spark off the alt wire - when the fan came in brief contact with it, so i decided to trim back one of the fan motor supports a little to make room for that alt wire... the cooling fan however did not, even with ...\-: force (which bent a few rad fins.. grr)so i guess i'm on a "slimmer fan" quest tomorrow. BOTH fans, will not have room for their lower mounts - as they come extremely close to the front crossmember, i'm hoping they can hold on the top mounts alone without vibration/noise/other bad side effects... if it is deemed necessary i'll find another way to give em some more support.

the drain plug fits - just, and i can back it out all the way, and tighten it in all the way. so atleast i don't gotta yard the rad to change fluid - that would be dumb.

on top of that, i changed a couple o-rings, between thermostat housing and head, the pipe to thermostat, and changed up my jdms lack of switch B temp sensor, for a USDM version with the switch, and new o-ring.

i'll post up some pics when i'm done.

oh, and my rad cap fit? how's that for odd.

Damn... you are exactly right. Oh well. I will order new ones from the dealership. Thanks for the catch.

I hope im not too dumb to figure out how to put a radiator cap on! Btw, do you have a 4th or 5th generation Lude?

Good job with the install

i have a 4th gen lude, (a 92, 4ws SI with a swapped in jdm h22a). the rad cap was an aftermarket stant (or something like that), but fit the stock rad and this koyo.. to my suprise.

yah i finished the install today (haven't gotten around to taking pics) ended up going with a slimmer fan (flex-a-lite model 112) - the mounting of the fan is a lil weak on my part - but i was lacking enthusiasm by the end - i'll rectify it another day... already bled and everything tho... just gotta take it for a rip, and make sure everything is still good.

thanks again

Again, good job with the install.

Where did you get the flex a lite fans? I got mine from inlinefour. I went with inlinefour because they fabbed custom mounts.

being a canuck - i got it from lordco (a BC retail outfit for vehicles)... suprisingly they looked up the flex-a-lite in a catologue, and also had it available on the shelf - I thought they might have to order it in, which would be bad - because my lude is also my daily commuter that i'll need this monday (: custom mounts for the flex-a-lites at inline 4 eh? i might be into that, rather than the bojang rig i got going at the moment. or i'll fab something out of aluminum at work.

Hello.. I just bought a koyo radiator and thought it would be easy to put it in but i didnt notice that i would run into so much trouble... first about the radiator cap.. my stock one will not fit for sure so i was wondering which one would be best for me.. My prelude is the 5th gen.... another problem that i ran into is that the stock one had oil hooked up into it so im guessing that it was a tranny cooler but the koyo does not have it.. so i was wondering if you had this trouble also.. if so i would have to get a tranny cooler right?? but the only ones that i can find is the atf one which i dont know will work or not because i have a manual... and lastly the stock fans... they said it should fit and it fits fine with the radiator but when i tried to install it in the car it did not fit at all.. so which aftermarket fans should i use that would fit perfect on the mounts?? well thanks for taking the time to helping me out.. i didnt know it would be so much work and money.. sigh.. haha

You shouldn't have any problems with the Koyo. I would get flex a lite fans. I am still working on the radiator cap.
