ODD-I vs OBD-II? How to notice the Difference?
Hello All.
I was wondering how I could tell the difference in an engine with OBD-I vs. that of the OBD-II? I know they stopped the OBD-I in 1995 and the OBD-II began in 1996. If I was looking to buy a new H22A, how would I see the difference between then two if I wasnt aware of what year they came from? If someone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Daniel.

The motor itself has nothing to do with OBD. The ECU you use determines the OBD compliance version...
As far as identifing motors goes... You know all motors stamped "H22A4" are from 97+ cars - so they will only work with the 97+ OBD2 H22a ECUs unless you want to change the injectors and wiring harnesses and stuff to work with a 93-95 P13 ECU. All the 93-96 motors are "H22A1" and they are all identical. The OBD1 P13 works fine with a 96 motor.

Thanks for the response. Is the H22a4 and the H22a1 also the case with the JDM motors? I was looking at buying JDM. What can you tell me about the stamping on that?
Also, anyone who has taken apart an obd1 and obd2 jdm motor can tell you also that the earlier motors use stronger, thicker rods.
Neither of these suggestion are that helpful. There's a whole host of internal changes, but that's not the point. If he's buying an H22a and wants to know the difference it would be impractical to break it down.
For a relatively easy way, you can take the cap and rotor off of the distributor. The OBD II distributor inside is relatively simple with only a single trigger wheel. It looks like this: http://www.higginstribe.com/gallery/...e=DSC00054.JPG
The OBD I distributor is more complex and looks like this inside: http://www.higginstribe.com/gallery/rebuild/index.php?image

If you're buying a long block with ECU, you can just check the codes on the ECU.
