Putting Si tranny back on

I am trying to put my Si tranny on the A6 I just got. What is the easiest way to put them back together? I tried putting them back together but I guess the input shaft kept hitting the grooves in the flywheel. I don't want to keep trying and eat the two up.

Yea, they are both sitting on my garage floor.
The haynes manual says something about using a lift to pick up the tranny and lining it up.
So I should try and get some bolts started and then push it together.

I'd just lift the tranny up and put it so it looks straight and wiggle it on until it sorta slipped in. But as long as you can get some bolts threaded and ease it together evenly that's about that same ****.
When we did my swap one of the dowel got messed up so we were having trouble getting it to go on so we layed the motor so the the flywheel was facing up and then set the tranny down on top of the motor, worked very well...we ended up haveing to pull the dowel out but was really easy doing that way
Put the two together and turn the crank pulley very little bits until the teeth line up correctly at the other end. Do not force your transmission onto your block. Once you get the splines lined up it's just a matter of pushing the two together. THEN you put a bolt or two in to bring them all the way together.

I did that too, works great especially with some anti-seize on the input shaft.

Do you know what year the transmission and engine are from? If I recall correctly, the 88s and some 89s had a different number of splines on the input shaft than the later cars. You can try counting the splines (the ridges) on the transmission's input shaft and on the hole on the inside of the clutch to make sure they match.

Did you remove your clutch pressure plate? If so buy a plastic input shaft alignment tool, loosen the pressure plate, put the tool in until you feel it go into the pilot shaft bearing and tighten the pressure plate.
I've tried aligning clutch plates by eye with no luck.

It's not your flywheel that has the splines, it's your clutch disc. If your flywheel has the correct size input shaft bearing in it and you get the clutch disc that fits your trans and isn't so large a diameter that it hits the pressure plate where it bolts up you should be good to go.

I bought the motor with the clutch and flywheel on it. They guy I bought it from pulled his tranny off when I picked the motor up. So I am guessing all that was correct.

Assuming you have the correct clutch disc to fit the transmission,
One thing that I have found to help is to
have the transmission in neutral..
Otherwise the input shaft will resist turning and
can hinder the alignment of the shaft to the disc..

Umm how do I put the tranny in neutral when it is sitting on my garage floor? I don't know if I have the correct clutch disc? I am trying to get the answer as to what year tranny and what year engine I have.
I will have to take pics of the motor to see if you guys can tell me what I have.

The easiest way to see if the disc fits the trans
would be to remove the clutch cover/pressure plate
and remove the clutch disc...
Then take the clutch disc and see if it will go on
the input shaft of the transmission.
You can move the shift rod in and out by using a punch or screwdriver
throught the hole for the bitch pin..

If you are sure the trans was on the motor/clutch then it is an alignment issue.
If you are not sure the trans was on the motor did you count the number of splines?
When you put the trans on as far as it will go how many inches away form the engine is it?
