Default what to look for when buying a 98 civic w/ 144,000 miles

Found one at a local dealer and it is a one owner car with high mileage and auto trans. I am concerned about the mileage especially with the auto trans. The driving here in this area is strictly stop light so the trans has done its share of shifting.

How durable are these transmissions and engines? I know maintenance has a lot to do with it and there are no service records.

Any common problem areas to look for on these cars?

I wouldn't go with the auto....because auto's on 4 cyl. suck butt.

Check the radiator for cracks around the top but below the upper radiator hose.

Check the CV joints.

Does it look like it was ever riced?

If it's never been riced out, price is right and the mechanicals are solid I say buy it. The engines are really durable the trans might be questionable at that mileage. If you do but it make sure and have the timing belt and water pump changed if you have no records of when it was done last.

I have 133k on my 97 and it still runs strong and burns no oil, zero leaks.

Some people say pass if its an auto trans, but if your just looking for a driver and plan to do nothing with it I say buy it.
