Default Civic doesn't start....exhaust popcorn noises!

So the other day I started my car up to drive my gf home and everything was as usual, i preceded to drive down the street, shift into 2nd noticed it was a little harsh, then shifted into 3rd, noticed it was a little harsher, pulled the shifter into neutral and car died. Pulled over. Tried to start it, it cranked and made popping noises, I figured I blew my engine from all the times I revved to 8k on stock valvetrain...so me and my brother pushed it home figuring maybe I bent a valve.

and heres what we checked today...we did a compression test
180, 180, 175, 180

So we got compression! and we're getting fuel and the plugs are fine, we also checked cam timing and thats right on also(1/2 tooth retarded Si cam)...so basically we're confused now.

But it cranks and tries to start and makes loud popping noises out of the exhaust. So if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

We're guessing that maybe its the distributor but we're not sure.
My brother's going to check the injector pulse tomorrow but I doubt thats the problem....

Its a d15b2 with mpfi swap...Running PM6 ECU

sounds like mine except mine always shifted harsh so i never thought anything of it. i downshifted, went to rev match to get in to traffic and it turned off. ran for about a minute after that and just shut off. i get fuel, spark, and my timing is fine but won't start. compression is fine, especially for the engine being cold during the test. did a tune up i was putting off (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, main relay) and have spark and fuel. battery is fine also. car seems to turn over slower than usual but not real slow like with a dead battery. i think the popping noise is the compression.

Had a similar problem in my brother's car and it was the distributor.

Here's a question:

Why rev to 8k when you don't make power revved up that high? Just for ***** and giggles, or are you willfully destructive towards your car?

the cam is installed half tooth retarded and it makes power way up top(thats alot of retard), so i jsut rev it out til it drops off in power, it honestly feels like it makes power upto 7500, but a couple of times sure upto 7800, 8000...But u know the stock tach, that could only be 7300 etc. d15b2's rod stoke ratio 1.59 to 1!!

When you shifted did it seem like the car had a hiccup, because it sounds close to my problem.

Sounds to me like your timingbelt sliped a tooth or two, pull the head out and check your valves for ***** and giggles.

well today it all most started twice! after cranking it both times for 15 to 20 seconds. But it jsut sounds like ****...it may be the igniter, we're going to take the dizzy apart tomorrow, can i use the old d15b2 igniter???

and we will check the fuel pump tomorrow as well.

Today we also checked the injector pulse and thats fine too...

and yes we're getting spark...

I think once we look at the dizzy tomorrow we may have an idea...

No, cam timing we checked real quick and its fine; we may open up the head and examine it, we're going to do another compression test tomorrow as well...

I had the same problem a month ago and the rotor had gotten loose so it was getting spark sometimes but not at the right timing. it ended up teh screw had backed out and was jumping around in there. definetly check the dizzy first

The popping mean you are only getting spark in 1-2 cylinders. Check you dizzy cap, your rotor (my rotor fell off and would only fire 1 cylinder, pop pop pop, that's how I figured it out. I was in the middle of no where on the side of the road with some tools.

CRXFORUM had the same happen when his sparkplug grommets gave way and filled 2 spark plug holes with oil extinguishing the spark.

I had the exact same issue with my dx. My timing belt jumped a tooth so we set it in timing and checked the distributor and the little screw that holds the rotor apparently fell out some how so we put the screw in and it started right up.

So, after checking everything again including wiring (which needs to be redone but is still fine) I have spark, fuel, and compression but no start. You can tell me all you want that isn't possible (it came up so much in search it's not funny) but that is what is happening. So does anyone KNOW and not just a guess?

Also, its not timing.
