Default TDC/Timing issues?

UPDATE: AT bottom of thread!

Setup: D16y7 block, D16y8 head.

Problem: I set the engine to TDC (Cam gear TDC marks aligned w/ head and No. 1 Cyl. @ TDC) and the car will run "decent" above idle but will not idle. I put the timing light on it (After warmed up and in car connector jumped) and it's showing WAY retarded(lights up on TDC mark so, 12deg. retarded). Anyone ever have this issue? Could it be possible that the OE marks are incorrect? Thanks.

Phil

no the oem marks are not incorrect. why are you using a timing light? what are trying to do, adjusted the timing(as in you have a timing gear) or just out of curiosity?

are you trying to adjust ignition timing or cam timing...?

a timing light will show you ignition timing. There's no need to set the engine to TDC, just put the electrical pickup thingy (I forget what it's called) on the spark plug wire for the #1 cylinder. If you want to adjust cam timing (with an adjustable gear), you don't need a timing light.

To see where the timing is at. I have it aligned as to the book but, it's 12deg. retarded. The light flashes on the TDC mark not on the timing marks. If I fully advance the dizzy it runs a little smoother and yields about 11deg. timing.

then you shouldn't be using a timing light. That's like getting a blender so you can make toast. It's nice to have, but it won't help in this case.

Do you have an adjustable cam gear? Is there slack in your timing belt?

on second thought, I can see how you can use a timing light to determine that. Have you adjusted you cam or ignition timing recently?

I was hoping you would realize what you were saying . I just put this head on here and I have a feeling it is a tooth off even though by the book it's dead on. I'm a DOHC guy that just started messing w/ these SOHC's and I hate them already

EDIT: Stock cam gear

on the Y8 head...on the back timing cover there's an arrow that "lines up" with the cam markings, but doesn't line up with the top of the block...humm
i got the same damn prob and im thinking it's one tooth retarded thanks to this arrow...try to see if it is in fact retarded...i'm fixing it later, i hope..

It didn't really click at first why you would be concerned with ignition timing, then I realized I'm a tard.

Are you sure you used the right marks when you put the head on? My b7 head and my z6 head use different timing marks to align them for TDC. I'm not sure if the y7 and y8 heads differ with which timing marks to use.

I love SOHC's. Just thought I should throw that in there

I see that arrow but, I thought I was needing to go the opposite direction that where that arrow would want me to turn the cam ?

you are retarded one tooth obviously. advance the cam one tooth and check ignition timing again, should be 14-16° at idle. only if the idle is perfectly steady.

why not put his name out there so others dont buy from him. by the way, glad to see you figured it and, sucks you had to go through all the labor of the headswap twice and spend money in the process.

Yep, did every thing I could w/ the Y8 head and it turned out to be no good. NO comprssion in cyl. 1. Put the Y7 head back on and 190+ across the board again. No valvetrain noise from the Y8 head and it's not bent/burnt valves (not visible at least).

Valves were adjusted properly . The head was just junk(Burn't valves).

The user I bought this from is Skunk_duece and he is denying that it is bad. He's a new user and had no vouches so, I guess that's my bad for buying from him but, he's saying I'm trying to scam him
