Default brake pedal freeplay

i installed a new master cylinder. i adjusting the free play to have less than 5mm. I was able to bed the new pads in without problems.
i went on the track and after 5mins the pads started locking up, i managed to get to the pits where they locked up hard .. then the pads caught fire (i guess they didn't like the lack of air from stopping).
i loosened the adjuster to have over 1/4" of free play and was able to do a full 20min session while using the brakes hard and didn't have any problems but the pedal feel/height isn't as good.

i have a race on saturday, so i'll probably leave it loose till after then .. but is there a trick to adjusting this? i don't have the special tool they show in the helms. I was adjusting it with the engine off, otherwise i couldn't feel the freeplay properly with my hand on the pedal... should i be doing it with vaccum in the booster?

are you adjusting the pushrod to m/c piston clearence or the brake pedal height on the inside of the car?

Make sure when you are adjusting it the engine is running so you have the booster working properly.

both .. pushrod clearance for the free play and pedal height to help heel-toe
pedal height isn't a problem since it doesn't affect the master, it's pushrod clearance i'm having trouble with

i can't really feel the freeplay with the car running though .. i tried with a small vaccum pump and it's the same. it's hard to tell when free play ends and the master starts to move because of the vaccum assistance.

i cut an old master in half to try to make a botch version of the honda adjustment tool .. just won't have time to try it this week

You will not be able to get adjustment on the push rod right with out the tool, I recommend that you take it by a shop that has the tool and pay them to adjust it. This will save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run.
