I have been researching this subject for a awhile now and I cant figure this out. My buddies b16a didnt come with a knock sensor but his PW0 ecu throws a code for it. Then a local honda mechanic said that no 1st gens came with knock sensors. then Steve at Hmotorsonline said that only some of b16s came with knock.

So which ones came with knock in Japan?? Why did Honda do this??

 

every one i have seen has one, all pwo and pr3's look for a knock sensor, if he doesnt have on there still is a blank spot on the block for one im sure, just drill and tap it

Yeah the block has a pre-tapped spot for it and I intend on putting one in. The thing is this local shop owner was trying to tell me that b16a's never came with knock sensors and why would I even want to bother putting one in? I didn't want to say anything cause the guy is supposidly the best honda mechanic in the area but I thought he was wrong. And now that my buddy heard this from this supposidly reputable guy hes all confused.

 

ive never seen a1st gen b16 with a knock. the b17a and b's have knocks. and the second gen gsr's. knock sensors are obd-1 feature's

 

Yea it has a knock sensor, you have to wire it up to your ecu but its the plug on the back of the block near the oil filter, should be a green plug, but the guy at the dealership should be fired for working for honda and not knowing, disgrace anyways.... heres a link that shows you where to wire the knock sensor, http://crxresource.org/images/...2.jpg........ you just have to find a plug to fit the empty plug in the back of the block

Yeah this what I am gonna have to do but the engine didnt come with a knock sensor :/ What knock sensor can I use?

 

how can you tell that it didnt come with a knock sensor?

I also have a b16a with a pw0 ecu and they came together meaning that they were all pulled from the same car mine has a knock sensor is what im trying to say

 

To my knowledge, they all came with knocksenors.

UPDATE: Alright well I went ahead and got a new knock sensor from a user on here and put it on and it cleared the code 23 our PW0 was throwing. There was a nice little spot right under the manifold where it screws in and everything so the blocks all came tapped for one but for whatever reason this motor didnt have one when it ended up in our hands.

btw I check another b16a with a pr3 ecu and it didnt have a knock sensor but yet it had no check engine light on ....?

 

the pr3 ecu might have been chipped.

 

Well here is my opinion, if pw0 and pr3 "both obd0 b16 ecu's" look for a knock sensor so you don't throw a CEL, then why would honda make a car from the factory with both ecu's like that but no knock sensor on the block?. Well if i were you, i would look more into it, because if your b16 does NOT have a knock sensor then you probally throwin a code for something else, then again though you could always just get your pw0 or pr3 tuned to not look for a knock sensor possible.

 

Ah...right ignore my post on that last part if you got it figured out, it figures your b16 did not come with a knock sensor of all the sensors you would need that are important, lol.

Yeah I know its just that we had to clear the code because A. he didnt like having the check engine light on all of the time and B. It backs off the timing adv just a little bit when the check engine light is on which is no good for performance.

 

But as I posted in the first post IM STILL interested in hearing what other people with first gen b16s have to say about knock sensors. Maybe we can help out some people and figure out why it seems some motors dont have them and some do.

Well it was steve from hmotorsonline and I doubt he would remove the knock sensors. my buddy just talked to steve about this whole knock sensor business and he claims that some of the 1st gen never came with knock sensors. I guess thats just the straigh answer.

 

XSi Integra B16A/S1s had knock sensors OEM and PR3s ready for them

 

So you saying the threaded hole is there, just no knock sensor? It was probally removed by someone in japan before the motor was bought and shipped to hmotors. If i recall correctly knock sensors are expensive from honda OEM and not exactly easy to find so i would imagine that being a scenario. If both the PR3 and the PW0 look for a knock sensor then all the first gen b16's have to come with a knock sensor.

 

ALL 1st gen B16's came with knocks...

If u got one w/o one someone must have taked it off...

There is not one b16 that left honda w/o a knock...and all PR3's and PW0's search for a knock unless its chipped...

I got a first gen b16a from a front clip and it has a knock sensors and came with a PW0 ecu

must have been a ef9/8 clip to have the PW0

 

My b16 had a knock sensor. The PR3 ECU never threw a cel except for the tps. I didnt have any O2 sensors hooked up for the first month I had it in the car either. Knock sensors dont do anything when you are in vtec.
