Couldnt remove oil filter, so I left it....
Just to keep this short and simple. I was doing an oil change tonight and I couldn't get the oil filter off. The previous oil change was done by the previous owner at the dealership.
So... I just left the filter on, drained the oil, and put in some Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30
Going on a road trip, so I had to get it done.
Anything I should do now? Change oil again in like 3,000 KMs instead of 5,000?
Any danger in having the old filter on still?
Thanks h-t

Next time go to auto store and buy the whatever it is that fits over the filter and uses a 3/8 ratchet to twist it off. They only cost like $3 or $4
Cool.
Their only suppose to be hand tightened, not retarded tightened so you cant get it off
So, do you think it'll be fine till my next oil change, or should I get it sooner??
BTW, its a '99 LS

you can either
a> buy an oil filter wrench from napa, checker, etc .. (make sure you get one that will actually fit)
or
b> punch a screwdriver through the oil filter, as far away from the threaded fitting as possible, and using that extra leverage loosen the filter

i use a little claw thingy that has like 3 posts and clamps around the filter. never fails at all. not sure the exact name of the part. anyways, you should change that filter, thats what obviously filters your oil. when your new oil is cycling through it, it will become dirty real quick.

I have used the screwdriver trick before. It really did the trick, but was messy as hell.
You NEED to get that filter off. The filter is just as important as fresh oil, if not more important.

If you have big hands like I do, try reaching all of your fingers to the base of the filter and grab (along with your palm of course). Sounds stupid but works every time.

That's how i was taught to do it when it was stuck.

I just use the fram oil filters with that black rubber grip stuff on the base of them. Or a strap wrench... it should be alright until your next oil change though.
Fram filters are terrible. Besides the fact that the grip tape is useless because the cover area is too small, the filter is huge compared to the Honda one. My socket wrench wouldnt fit over it. (did the guy say he puts in Mobil 10w5!?!? wth is that?)
That fram sure grip is the ****(even though I use K&N filters). But seriously kid. You should try to get a new filter on there before the road trip. It is easily just as important as the oil itself. Go get an oil filter wrench and if that doesn't work jam a screwdriver through it and start twistin.

What's so bad about them? I would really like to know. And that "grip tape" is plenty big enough to get a hand around it.

You pretty much defeated the whole purpose of the oil change since the oil filter has about a 1/2 quart of hot, dirty oil in it.
The people at the dealership probably did not lube the little rubber ring thats on the end of the filter. If those things arent oiled up prior to installing, you will regret it when its time to remove it. The dealership most likely did it on purpose so you would go back to them to get it off.

dealerships aren't that evil
i know some dealerships where the lube tech doesn't change the filter. hahahahaha
anyways, just go on your trip and when you return change your oil again. no biggie. i went to honda and actually bought the oil filter remover (goes to a 3/8 ratchet). but then i always use honda oil filters so it was a good investment for me.

Thats the whole point. The filter was so big that I couldnt get a good grip on it with just my hand (and I have fairly large hands) Fram filters are just plain cheap (and I dont mean by price) They have cheap bypass valves, very flimsy anti-drainback valves, and have the filter element glued to cardboard endcaps. Ill pay the extra bit for genuine Honda, and in the event I cant find one of those, shell out $10 for a HAMP filter.
I work at a oil change place and EVERY time a dealer filter is on their, it is a pain in the *** to get off. They always use the ratchet tool to put the filters on....*******. Heres what i use at work.
The two on the left will give you the most trouble using because of the limited space we have on our integras to access the fiter. I would def suggest going to autopars store to buy the cup on the right. Just use a 3/8 ratchet on it and filters come off like butta.
Oh, and on a side note, dont worry about leaving the filter on for another 3k oil change. Nothing will happen to ur motor at all. I wouldnt suggest doing it, but ur in the situation where i would have left it on also. Dont worry about it.
