I used to paint models and the trick is to warm up the spray with warm water then start painting. It comes out much smother when applying the paint.
The key is when doing wrinkle paint is prep and patients. The VHT paint can claims 48 hours before its cured. I let mine sit roughly 72 hours and it came out nice.
OT: Does it matter if its high temp or not? At Vatozone they sell some Wrinkle Finish paint, but it doesn't say anything about high temp on the can.

shake the can real well...spray it one thin smooth layer at a time and let each layer dry before adding another layer so that it can wrinkle good...i found that it was best to use a blow dryer between each layer to help the paint dry and wrinkle up
here's my valve cover using the krylon black wrinkle paint...hasnt chipped off yet and the heat hasnt affected it....its rock hard

I use the regular wrinkle-black (non high-temp specific) and have nothing but success. I've done two on my own engines and multiple vc's for friends..
actually my ls' vc has been fine for at least three years (driven 24/7/365). I actually bake the vc after the application is dry, so ignore the previously posted high-temp comment.
I've tried pre-heating to 350, let bake for 5-10 minutes, remove and cool.
or
put the vc in the oven, turn the *** to 350, once the oven hits 350 turn it off, leave the vc in the oven untill the oven completely cools, remove

you dont. after the paint cures tape off around the outside of the letters enough so you wont hit it with sandpaper and sand the top of the letters with 180/400 with a small block
you can also put some grease or lipstick or something on it but be carefull you dont get it anywhere you want the paint to stick.

I found red wrinkle finish from krylon at my autozone. worked awesome. i painted and it wasnt really wrinkling. it then started raining so i had to put it on wet and when it warmed up and dried it wrinkled perfect!!!! but since i had to rush towards the end it got smudged.
its a easy fun diy though. ill do it again. i think i will go with black this time though.

i used aircraft remover and grease remover to strip it of everything on the vc...i then used 1000 grit to sand it and wetsand since my vc was caked with some nasty stuff
