CAR: 98 Acura Integra GSR

PROBLEM: The car shakes violently when accelerating between 50 and 60 mph.

FIXES: I just recently fixed two damaged lower engine mounts and verified that the rest for ok. Also I had my tires balanced and replaced a broken CV boot (Inner and Outter). I'm worried that the broken CV boot could have caused damage to the axle.

I'm not quite sure what could be causing the shaking when I accelerate, but it seems to be getting worste. When I was replaceing my cv boots I noticed a tear in the ball joint. Also the axle didn't look damaged when I removed it and re-greased the bearings.
Does anyone know about ball joints and how to tell if they are bad? Also can a ball joint cause your car to shake?

I have H&R coil overs and ignalls camber kit, which both seem to be ok. Any ideas as to what could possible by happening. I'm up for a 90K tune up. Could my timing belt going bad cause shaking?

I hope there is nothing wrong with my engine.

 

Bump for ctr1085 . I don't know if i can help much but I'll try. Is it only a certain speed, 50-60 and all other speeds are fine? Could be something's outa allignment, maybe ur differential's going out in ur tranny, that happened to me once and it shook like ur describing, but at lower speeds. It might help to jack ur car up, so the front tires are off the ground then accelerate or have a friend help so u can better see what the problem is. Hope this helps some.

 

I was also reading that it could be my wheel bearings. Would bad wheel bearings cause shaking at certain speeds under acceleration?

How would you be able to check and see if the differential is going out? I did try to check and see if anything was abnormal when accelerating with my wheels in the air. No shaking when theres no pressure on the wheels.

 

I don't know but my car will vibrate around those speeds at random times.. Has nothing to do with road conditions, and it's not something that always happens but I get that too.

 

Also I have noticed that the vibration is less prominent in the morning when the road conditions are cooler vs. mid-afternoon when it's HOT (i.e. 90-110 degrees)

 

well sometimes a bad balance will cause it to do it, but it sounds like yours is not the case.

maybe a bent wheel, that was a problem on my old tiburon when i first bought it.

 

I swapped my friends rims with mine and am driving on them now and still get the vibration.

 

when's the last time you got a 4 wheel alignment? Just a thought.

 

more than likely it is the axle. What side of the car is the vibration coming from?? And yes it could be a wheel bearing. I am going through axle problems right now with my boosted ls, its really a pita...

 

It could be your rotors being worped, because mi friend has a 240sx and his car had the same problem that around 50 and 65mph the car would start to shake and the steering wheel would go crazy. so we took the frount rotors off and relized that the rotors were worped. so we got new ones and that just about fixed the problem.

 

I had a 4 wheel alignment around 6 months ago. I had my tires balanced again around a month ago. I guess it couldn't hurt to get an alignment again.

 

Check your wheel hubs, wheel bearings and get some tools and make sure everything is tight. Also check your tranny bolts, that happened to me and my damn tranny was about to fall off.....
You thing your car is bad, I got a solid motor mount in the rear and solid billett torque mounts, my damn CD player hardly works.

 

It is the axles. You replaced the boots, yes, but the inner CV joint is worn out. The grooves inside the inner joint that receive the tripod from the axle are supposed to have zero play. When they get worn it develops some play in there which will cause nasty vibration during acceleration only.

I have extensive experience with these symptoms. Replace the axle and you'll be good to go. Stay away from CCT-brand rebuilts (from AutoZone or NAPA), I replaced my axles 3 or 4 times before getting a set that did NOT vibrate.

 

does it shake say in u put it in neutral? and it only shakes when you are accelerating?

Anyways I only have vibration upon acceleration.

I just priced a remanufactured axle from Acura at $177 + $50 core.
Autozone is less than $100 for a new axle, but I don't want to end up sending them back all the time. Does anyone know where I can get a good axle for a decent price? If I'm going to pay $200, then where can I get some upgraded axles?

 

I had my rear mount bracket bolts vibrate loose and fell out, rendering my rear mount useless. I didn't know at the time what happened, and was getting terrible vibrations during acceleration. After swapping the axles several times, and the vibrations would come back almost immediately.

I figured it was the differential bearing also, so I replaced clutch and diff bearings. That's when I noticed the rear mount missing bolts. I didn't have the bolts, so I drove it without the rear mount for a few miles till I could get them. Well, the axles kept getting ruined until I replaced the rear mount bolts and used fresh axles. All is well now. Its really nice being able to accelerate under full throttle to redline again.

Why am I the only guy who has never had problems with Napa/AutoZone/Pep Boys axles....... been pushing 400hp on them with no problems, no breakage and no arguments.

 

are any of your rims bent? my car would vibrate violently slightly side to side between 50-70mph and it was cause one of my rims was bent pretty bad.

 

Anyone hear of "A1 cardone" axles?
I called Kragen and they sell them out the door for $96.96.
I had to purchase the driver side axle over the phone, so I can get it tommorow. If anyone has heard of anything bad about this brand let me know so I can cancel the purchase.
I believe from searching the Internet, SAAB & Lexus use this brand of axel in their cars.

 

AutoZone sells a different brand of axle that is brand new, I think I heard they were decent for a OEM replacement.

DSS and Gators are good high-performance axles, but of course they are pretty expensive.
