Default good tires for solo 1

first of all before you search ****'s jump on me, i already tried the search function and all i got were threads where people would ask the same question but the only replies he would get would be about 5-6 people telling him to use the search function.

anyways i have a 2001 stock type r, and i am looking for a good track tire. right now im thinking toyo RA1's or maybe even advan a032R but im open for suggestions.

they do need to be DOT legal as i will be using them to drive to and from the track, but aside from that they will see very little street driving. i dont care how fast they wear down.

also what size tires should i get? i was told to get 15/45/225 but that seems a bit overkill for the stock rim

thanks

I'm not a Solo1 rules guru..
Are you trying to compete or win? What's your budget? Do you need to run 15x6?

Even if you're stuck on 15x6, I'd try to squeeze a 225, at least in front. Rear isn't as important.

Also, the GRM guys just tested a couple of hot autocross tires, Hoosier A6 and Kumho Ecsta V710. The Ecsta V710 edged out the A6, albeit in a different "size", thought the tires were dimensionally the same.

Toyos might be more appropriate for a drive to the trak. A032R too, but it's probably not as competitive (or it wasn't last time I looked, I think there's some new A032 compounds out)

RA-1's are pretty much the standard at shannonville, mosport, and cayuga for hondas. They've proven their worth time and time again. Great tire overall.

In terms of size, I'd stick with a 205/50/15. A bit wider than stock, and the steering stays almost true, but still diffrent feeling than the 195 bridgestones.

For now, especially if this is your first couple of times going lapping or Solo event, it's a really good idea to scrap the r-compound tires entirely for now and go with a good set of street tires. For the simple reason of experience. You can get yourself into some serious **** with r-compounds and the speeds you can reach with that amount of grip. Starting on the street tires will make you a better driver in time, and will make you learn your car's limit in the corners. Then you could go for some RA-1s and things will come together.

I'd go for some Azenis or something of the sort for your first few Solo time trials, then step up to an RA-1.

Just my $0.02

It's not clear from your post whether you're asking about autocross, or about actual racetracks. It's also not clear how much experience you have - whether you're just starting out, vs whether you're in competition for every last thousandth of a second.

That's what I use. Very sticky, and a great value too.

(More so for reasons of tire availability. Performance differences due to the difference in treadwidth are really minor, compared to differences between different makes/models of tire.)

(More so because if you're just starting out, you won't be coming anywhere near your tires' or your car's limits anyway. And, as mentioned, you can learn better using street tires.)

Great advice from 98 ITR.

You're probably thinking of Yoko's A048 track tire.

Ken and 98 ITR beat me to it.

Start with your normal everyday tires until you have plenty of experience (15+ events). Simple as that.

Go for the Advan's because if you have a chance to win a new set of a tires if you are running on Yoks during a Solo 1 event. haha

Solo1 is a warm-up lap followed by a hot lap, on a track, by yourself.

There's an H (hard/original) compound, and a new S (soft) compound A032R. "S" is suggested for Autocross through Med-temp track (so, qualification or solo1 counts as an "s" compound application).

The H compound is only recommended for HPDE and autocross schools or high-temp racing. Not really for Autocross except for school conditions.

These aren't new. Both H and S compounds have been available in North America for several years.

I was under the impression that Yokohama was in the process of discontinuing the A032R, in favor of the A048, which is new to our market. Your use of the word "new" is why I thought you were talking about the A048.
