Default Cold Air Intake Vs Short ram intake

I currently have a short ram on my car, is it worth it for me to get the AEM CAI?? How much real horsepower would I gain with the Cold Air Intake?? When the bypass valve is installed, is any power lost? and do any of you guys ever had water ingested into the engine??

get the cai
1) yes its worth it
2) there is alot more real hp with a cai then a short ram -- short ram does nothing
3)yes power is lost with a bpv, not much, but intakes dont do horribly much anyway
4)use your head and youll never ingest water -- dont drive through rivers, or big puddles and youll be fine...ive been through bad **** and never had a problem

once again i emphasize the SEARCH button

I have an AEM CAI on my 97 GSR and it doesn't add that much more power than a short ram. Personally I like the sound of the short ram better than the CAI, especially when V TEC kicks in!

I have had my AEM CAI on my car since I bought it. I am not too crazy about the bypass, but if you live in a rainy area it is necesary. I pulled off the bottom half this weekend, and have not noticed a real difference. I think it pulls harder up top, but this is from my uncalibrated butt.

short ram sounds better...but cold air makes more power. proven by physics. (thank you professor allmotordc2 )go cold air.

With the CAI it will pull much harder throughout the whole the RPM range, pretty much up until redline... Don't get the by-pass valve... Just cut your piping in the engine bay like you would for a by-pass valve, then place an extra boot with two hose clamps... When it rains, disconnect the lower portion of the CAI and put the filter in the engine bay until it's safe to drive with the CAI again... This is how my setup is and I don't have problems with it... Just my .02... ... ...

I think the short ram sounds and feels a lot better than the cold air , and also i believe it pulls harder, I believe its like this because the air coming in doesn't have to travel as much as the cold air. But yes the cold air will give u a slight increae in power mybe 2-4hp

I've got an Iceman CAI. This is the one to get. You can change it to either short air or CAI.

Who cares about the sound! Neither sound bad, and the purpose of it is to gain horsepower, not sound cool. Come on now fellas. We're not a bunch of ricers here, are we?

From my own experience with both, the CAI does pull harder in the higher range of rpm. You just got to be much more careful with deep puddles. Plus, your filter gets dirtier faster.

Or go Icebox and have the best of both worlds

What you are hearing is not the VTEC crossover -- it is the secondary runners opening. VTEC engages around 4800 RPM, the secondaries at ~6000.

Your two points contradict each other.

i have the iceman cai too.

but isn't the other way around.....you get more power at lower speeds
but when u get to speeds of 60(guessing, probably more) n up the short ram is better, because the air it sucks travels less compare to a longer cai.

this is also from my experience, I use to have a short ram(generic) and when the car gets to higher speeds. the car feels stronger and seem to keep pullin'
Im comparing it to my iceman cai.

Im actually going to take off the extension for the iceman cai (maybe next week) to make it short and do my butt dyno again.

^---my opinion---^

i have iceman cold air intake. sounds good and does increase increase power. but now i'm running the short ram because someone jacked my air filter and tore up my lining. now i'm running short ram with the stock air filter rigged into the iceman piping. here are some photos

abra cadabra! ze filter is gone! and the 50$ lining is torn

and here is the ghetto rigged short ram with the stock air filter! damn theives!
i once saw someone with a pair of pantyhose covering his intake piping cause his filter fell off but that seemed way to ghetto!

I read a thing a long time ago (can't remember where) but some dude put a digital thermometer probe in his engine bay. When he was stopped there was a huge difference (like 40 degrees) between outside and inside the engine bay, but when he was moving there was almost no difference. So the benifit of a CAI is mostly for standing starts, once you get going your intake air is the same temp, and with the short ram, the air has less distance to travel.

I have read this same type of information. After about 20-30 mph the CAI loses one advantage, the cold air which gets underhood. The CAI has a much longer length, which creates a resonance and it own powerband. The short rams resonance will be higher in the powerband depending on length. A dyno or, drag strip run is not a good comparison since both would favor a CAI style intake. It would be nice to see a test on a car from 0-100 and from 60-100 with both style intakes. I am not sure which would win in 0-100(maybe CAI), but 60-100 I think short ram has the advantage since this is after the CAI's resonance.
