Default Discussion: Burning Oil

Discussion: Burning Oil

So i was just wondering how often you guys check your oil
And how much do you usually have to put in.

I am pretty much just trying to compare
And make sure my car doesn’t burn more oil then what it should.

I know that our cars, do burn oil (more then most cars)

I will be topping off the oil today (filling to full mark)
And seeing where its at by the end of this week..
__________________________________________
It just bugs me because my car smells like crap... (Burning oil/gas etc)
I have a Fujitsubo Legalis-R and Berk Test Pipe

So i could understand some what where the smell is coming from

But lets Discuss !!!!

when i do oil changes it's usually 5 quarts to get it right. driving 1k and checking the dip stick i don't have any problems with the oil level. I hit the occasional vtAk once a day. are you burning a lot to where you have to top it off on a daily basis?

No not Daily...

I had to add about 1qt in 1600 miles

I just got the car last week, and since i got it, i have driven it about 1600 miles, and i had to add about 1 qt within that time

But.. I am not going to lie, i have been hitting "VTak" quit often
My driving has since then clamed down... so i should start seeing a difference.

Mine goes down about 2 ounces every week(I am guessing about the actual days) It seems it is always down one X when I check the oil, I just pour slowly for about two - three seconds (about 2 ounces of oil) and recheck in the morning (this is the best way for me to get an accurate read). It is then usually on the money. I will clock my mileage and see what the ratio is..oil consumtion/mileage. Will post back later in a couple days to tell you how it went.

I also hit vtech A LOT Just can not help it, since that is why I bought the car. Treat her right and drive the hell out of her.

A quart every 1600 is a bit much IMO. Mine would burn one.. maybe 2 cross-hatch marks on the stick every oil change... 3500-4000 miles. After draining the oil I like to put it back in the quart bottles and see how much I really DID burn.

Half track half street. About 2500 hard miles, and my car has a little under 8k.

AP1 and AP2 use oil at different rates...AP1's have always used more oil (and some say the '00 uses more than the others).

Oil consumption is normal...I go through at least 1qt every 3k miles.

Using more than 1 qt per 3k is bad. I never burned more than 1/2 quart through 3k and that includes track miles. I only burned oil at the track on hot days. I used Mobil 1 Syn the entire time I owned the S

If its true.. Then my car is to prove this...
Mine being a 00

i will try to take it easy this week and see how things go for the S. checking the oil bi-daily

Seeing how my oil consumption is with normal driving compared to vtecing it frequently

Read the link:

http://www.s2ki.com/forums/ind...94625

Also, here is an excerpt from a Honda letter to dealers from waaay back in '01:

"Engine Oil Consumption: '00-01 S2000

The '00-01 S2000 has an engine that, due to its high performance nature, can consume a quart of oil in 1,000 miles when driven at high rpm. And during the first 600 miles (its break-in period), the engine may consume even more oil. Make sure you remind your customers to check the engine oil level EVERY time they fill the fuel tank, and if the need to add oil, use ONLY 10W-30 grade for optimum fuel economy and year-round protection. Have them refer to pages 119 and 155 in their owner's manual for details."

I have read that pretty thoroughly as I am on S2KI as well. I'm sorry but I am sticking to what I have said. Many say our car is supposed to eat oil but I have not found that the case for most owners. I know of many track only S2K's that do not burn a drop. All those cars see is VTEC 90% of the time, if not more.

The car eating oil comes down to the rings (I know there are other reasons but rings are majority). Now how the rings are effected, break in. Which way it was done, who knows but that is what comes down to. There have been a few people on s2ki that have gotten new motors due to the oil eating, if its excessive (1qt per 1k or less)

This is a pointless argument as you will saying Honda says this, blah blah. I will tell you this. If my motor was burning 1qt per 1k, I'd be tearing the motor apart asap to check the rings. There is no reason it should burn that. Also, you do realize Honda released that to cover their @ss. Who releases a car which has a capacity of 5.1 qts but will burn more than half of it before an oil change is due? Honda thoroughly tested the motor and I'm sure if it was prone to burning that much, they would have fixed it before its debut

my friends prelude burnt oil also but i believe it was mixing a bit into the fuel, which from the sparse info i have on preludes is that their engines do this, mopt supposed to, but do...new rings

The krank vent units have been very good at keeping oil consumption down. The vaccum in the crankcase has helped to seal the rings a bit better. We have seen many of our cars gain a good chunk of horsepower F/I and have begun our testing phase for N/A cars. Many users have noticed a significant reduction in oil consumption.

After reading a little about the krank vent unit i am interested.
But will it help me for my almost stock setup

If oil consumptions continues to be a problem even after driving habits are changed
Then i will give the krank vents a try.

I appreciate every ones opinions, This is a known issue with the S2000, and I am glad we can discuss it

They have been shown to help smooth out the torque curve on some american cars and some of the NASCAR engines. We actually want some N/A S2000's to give it a try to see what exactly it can do. Some of the guys running them now have had much lower oil consumption (sideways got 90% reduction I believe).

Do you see lots blue smoke coming out of your exhaust? At idle, or when you shift gears (by looking in your review mirror and seeing puffs of blue smoke).

If you do, I promise, that has nothing to do with your test pipe.
