Technically the exhaust is not part of required emissions standards in CA. I see people get away with CARB intakes and headers.

I mean theres a lot of modified cars in CA.... how do they get away with it? Do they do illegal smogs or have DMV hookups? Or do they just get lucky and pass the smog test, and the person does a horrible job at visual? I don't get it

Obviously it depends heavily on exactly how much you're modified. The other major peice in the puzzle is the smog technician themselves. I've heard of cases where the smog techs refuse to even look at the car because of an intake, or header.. CARB legal or otherwise. Then on the other end of the spectrum, there are those that pass smog *legally* with mildly ported heads, stage 1 cams, and a completely carb legal i/h/e setup. You may have better luck with the little mom and pop smog on the corner than a huge franchise smog shop.

And of course you have the 'hookups', in which you could get away with practically anything.. So the question really is, what is it that you intend to do, mod wise?

well whatever you decide to do illegally, make sure you don't make your car look that way. a cop will pull you over in a heartbeat, and he will have probably cause to search under your hood for illegal parts. then you'll have to be REF'd and you'll be facked.

basically, with regards to emission components, anything that is not carb legal is illegal and technically you SHOULD fail smog, other than emission components, technically anything you modify on your car that is not oem or an oem substitute is illegal, and so is going 66mph on the freeway....

basically any exhaust from the cat back is smog legal cuz it has nothing to do with emissions, however is may not be legal in other ways like sound levels

intake, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and kits like turbos & superchargers and nitrous have to be carb exempt or pending to pass visual, you also have to be withing +/- 2 degrees of stock ignition timing, you also must have the stock ecu with nothing like vafc's altering maps or timing...

all emissions components must be functioning how they should, so even though the egr is hooked up no block off plates, depending on how **** they are even catch cans off a pcv valve could make you fail, also all vacuum lines must be properly connected, the components and vacuum lines are based off of the diagram in the helms
*carb legal components that replace stock components that alter the vacuum routing supercede the helms, for example, using a carb legal intake on a vtec prelude, in doing so, you can legally remove the resonator, cap off the vacuum line that would normally go to the resonator can cap off or put a filter on the line from the air intake bypass that would normally go to the intake tubing

cannot have any CEL's, and the CEL test must pass when jumping the connector to make sure there arent any CEL's in case you just removed the bulb in the dash

as far as internals, while illegal if not carb exempt/pending, theyre not going to pull the oil pan or head or valve cover to check for stock cranks, pistons, cams, altered headgaskets/milling/decking to make sure of stock compression

obviously, you have to have the cat....

all the stuff listed above pretty much only matters if you goto large chains like 76 or pepboys, honestly, if you goto smaller urban places or minority places, visual is ignored and all that matters is that you pass the sniffer test

as for the sniffer, 99% of cars will pass every time or fail every time, the 1% exception is if you have a misfire or something like that, also, some cars may pass/fail depending on air temps, cars in this situation have problems, for example, an o2 sensor reading a little off so that you are running just a tad rich, cold air temps = more air to combust with the additional fuel, hot air temps = less air and leftover fuel as all the air has been combusted with not all of the fuel, which means high hydrocarbons...if the o2 sensor is reading lean, this could cause high combustion temps and higher NOx

basically, if you know your smog place wont do a visual, go for the bolt ons and even cranks and altering compression and cams, if they dont check for different ecus and tuning, youre basically good if the tune is good and your cams dont keep intake and exhaust valves open at the same time for too long (stage 1 will usually pass, stage 2 cams sometimes, stage 3+ will never pass) you will be good with the sniffer as long as everything is functioning normally and the right octane is used

however, if you have these mods and a cop says to got the ref, they will rape you with anything not carb legal and ecu mods and timing and give you no leeway at all w/ things like ebay intakes....

dont worry, all this sounds a lot worse than it is....learn to do all the work yourself, mod your car, and if you have to take stuff off for smog it wont be a big deal to do so...

Thanks for the info. Out of curiousity... obviously superchargers and turbos wont pass visual... but can u pass the sniffer emission portion of it?

most likely yes, jackson racing are smog legal (forgot about that one before...) so they should pass smog cuz theyre designed to...turbos should as well, since the sniffer is at 25 and 35 mph, usually around 2000 rpms at the most, most turbos have very little boost at that rpm so there shouldnt be much if any additional air and/or fuel

gotcha thanks. So most of the problems just lie in visual passing, not the actual emissions?

assuming your engine is running like it should, but one screwy sensor, one exhaust leak before the o2, on exhaust seal failing, etc., and you will the sniffer, of course that applies to every car modified or not, so really its no biggie, the visual can be a headache until u find a shop that only cares about sticking the car on the dyno with the sniffer...anything visual though could be removed pretty easily, even a mild turbo kit would only take a few hours to remove and put back to stock, not counting the internals of course...

Well like you said, u cant really notice internals . I just wasn't aware of the extent of the smog process (what u can and cant get away with). My old h23a1 had its timing cranked up like +5 i think, and it failed.... they turned it down to +1, passed it, and then cranked it up to +5 again LOL

smog stations in southern cali is pretty easy if u pay a little extra. OC/LA area . Smog Only stations r a little harder. Only thing i got away with was an air intake. Had to make everything stock to pass visual inspections. But if u have a lot of work done its not worth ur time. But for about 200-300 bucks u can pass...wink.

I had to do a test only.

I had no hookups unless i wanted to pay something retarted like 500 dollars.

I bought a stock h22 head for around 250 bucks. Pulled my JUN head ( ported and polished, JUN cams and valvetrain with STR cam gears, Prospeed header etc. ) and did the head swap in one night. Doing the timing for the first time took a little while.

In the end i sold the JUN head to someone who was putting it on a race car with a built block. Stock or real close to it is better then the Ref.

Like everyone said, depending on the shop, you may be able to skate by. But if an officer feels like sending you to a ref, you be fuckz0red.

The best way is the legal way! We legally pass the vehicles using CNG/LPG/propane gas. The vehicles are slightly modified and passed on propane, and then, upon the owners discretion, changed back to regular pump gasoline, there are no permanent modifications done to the vehicle, the turnaround is about 4-6 hours.

We will gladly explain the conversion process to anyone who would like to convert their own vehicles, please feel free to email us at: jargon_@hotmail.com with any questions. Any engine can be legally smogged and registered. Turboed, supercharged, high compression JDM motors, K20's, K24's, B18's, B20's, H22's, any engine in any car.

Yes, the B20 is a truck motor, yes, it is an illegal swap. Conventional wisdom would agree with you, however, we use propane gas to pass any engine swap in any car. There are legal ways to smog a B20. Read on......

Illegal B20 swap + propane gas = Alternative Fueled Emissions compliant engine swap. Alternative fuel is the key word here, forget the motor swap, with Alternative fuel, it is all about making the swap run clean. Even if the engine swap is a turbo GSR, Standalone with ITB's, once it is run on propane, all the performance mods are now legal because you can argue that the GSR, turbo, Standalone and ITB's are needed to take advantage of propane's 110 octane rating. This is cutting edge here, just because this is a loophole that is not commonly used, doesn't mean that it is BS.

Keep in mind that, once you remove the propane and re-tune your setup to run on 91 octane pump gas, you are no longer 100% legal, but wait, there's more.... here is the good part.... the BAR referee sticker in your engine compartment doesn't specify fuel. So, when Johnny law does pull you over, all they do is scratch their heads and wonder how you BAR ref'd a turbo GSR, Standalone with ITB's....

Besides BAR reffing your engine swap there is another interesting loophole that keeps Johnny Law off your back, it is called smog exemption, this exemption is a one time emissions test on propane that certifies your vehicle as an Alternative fueled vehicle and smog exempts the vehicle FOREVER, with smog exemption, you will NEVER have to smog your vehicle ever again, even when you sell it. Smog exemption is a legal loophole that smog exempts your vehicle forever, no more fooling around with shady emissions shops.

If you look hard enough, there are legal loopholes for everything. Laws, mandates, regulations and government protocols are written by attorneys with legal loopholes and/ oversights written in, that allow everyday citizens to drive, smog, register and import any vehicle ever made on the face of this planet.

For the record, smog exemption, carb exemption, and BAR reffing are 3 completely different processes, these terms cannot be interchanged. BAR reffing, by far, is the most difficult and useless certification. Smog and Carb exemption are far better than a BAR ref'd swap because a BAR ref'd swap still must undergo strict emissions testing, while the smog/carb exempted vehicle doesn't. Also, Johnny Law can ref ticket a Bar ref'd car, but not a carb exempted car. The simple definition of a carb exempted car is a car that is exempted from all carb emissions mandates. Basically, local law enforcement can pop your hood, but, because the vehicle is both smog/carb exempt, it is therefore emissions compliant regardless of what turbo
k20, GSR or b18 engine swap you may have, a smog/carb exempted car can legally drive around with a fully built turbo GSR with no emissions controls, and never get a referee ticket.

You gotta pay $$$$$$$$ to play.......
