Default header for vtec prelude - not a honda guy need help for the GF's car

I am a bmw guy but i come here on ocassion to check out pics and whatnot.

anyway my gf was quoted 600 bucks for a new header and what they called a "downpipe" (i think turbo but whatever) which i assume goes between the headers and the cat. I thought that sounded ridiculous so i came here for help.

i think its a 95 or so, its the one right before the newest version that they stopped making. unfortunetely i don't know the engine code. Either way i looked online and saw that the aftermarket headers hover around 300 bucks. Is there somewhere online that sells stock parts for cheap or does anyone has one of these "downpipes" that they would like to sell.

i am sure its an easy job so i can't let her spend 900 bucks after installation on this.

thanks for the help and my gf thanks you as well.

^^ Rip off!

You could buy a used or new one for a lot cheaper than that..

If you just want a cheap header, go to E-Bay and look up a Header there. The cheap ones are most likely crap, but try to find either a cheap DC-Sport or Megan Header.. Best options for a cheap header if that's all you will want. It'll include the "Down-pipe" also.
Might give her car an extra few HP, which I *know* she'll need.. lol

But yeah, find out which Engine code it is and then look though.
It's probably either a H23A1 or H22A1 which will be the VTec Motor.

Good luck!

quoted 600 for what kind of header? an oem header?

which model prelude is it? S? Si? Vtec? this will help determine what your choices are as far as aftermarket headers.

if it's an h22, and u just want an oem header, you could pick up a used one for 100 bux at the most. in fact i have an upper section in my garage (2 piece, upper and lower) that's doing absolutely nothing...

You must've be quoted for a brand new OEM header. However, I don't think new downpipes sell for that much!

Anyway, just buy a Megan header off ebay.

To find out what engine your GF has, read the VIN number. There is a sequence of letters and number that will help determine what engine is in it.

BA8 is a Prelude S. F22A engine
BB2 is a Prelide Si. H23 engine
BB1 is a Prelude VTEC. H22 engine.

If I were to guess, she has the Prelude Si H23 engine. They are the most common models.

she said they quoted her a jones op downpipe and then another 90 for the flex pipe.

the flex pipe is attached to the downpipe where i found it online for 136 for the vtec. I dont things its the "most common model." it def has vtec though because you can hear it switch into at 5xxx whatever.

just to reinforce what everyone else has said, you can pick up a Megan header on ebay for ~$130-140. It's stainless steel and quality is pretty good (it just doesn't make much extra HP over stock). It replaces both pieces of the OEM exhaust manifold (top piece with flange/primary tubes, bottom piece with downpipe and flex joint).

And I'm sure if you posted up in the parts wanted section that you need an OEM header for a 4th Gen VTEC, you'll find a decent used one pretty quickly.

4th Gen OEM headers are rare. He is better off getting a Megan header IMO.
