Fit on Highways unstable?
I went to the Richmond Auto Mall in BC to look at the Fit, look gorgeous in person.
But the salesperson says since the Fit is lightweight, it will be unstable and affected by winds and large trucks on the highway, and make it quite unsafe. How true is that? I might ocassionaly drive on highways.
My dad is pretty much bought into the unsafe thing, and believes a heavier car would be more safe. He also thinks the car is prone to swaying because it's taller.
I really like the Fit, but if it's true what the salesperson says, it's unsafe on the highway, it will force me to rethink what I want
Thanks!

whoever told you that is smoking crack...
I've had mine up to 95 and it's rock solid. Don't get me wrong, it's a light car, strong winds will move you around some but I haven't noticed anything that would be even remotely thought of as unsafe. Cruising at normal highway speeds the car is fine, passing trucks is no different in my Fit than it was in my Hyundai Tucson GLS 4WD. This car also tracks VERY FLAT in curves and corners, my Tucson would lean all over the gawdamn place. Tell your Dad to go test drive one with you. Sounds almost to me like the sales person wanted to up-sell you into something much more expensive.
Unsafe on the Highway = BULLSHIT

Almost all vehicles are 'affected' by winds on the highways and truck traffic. It's a very stable car and I'm sure after you test drive one you will be convinced as well.
I'm with Hasafraker...I've had my Base model up to 90mph and it was fine. More stable than my 98 Civic DX coupe was. That car got blown around more so than I have yet in the Fit.

I have almost 2000 miles already and mostly Hwy...yes there is some push from the big trucks but there also is in my wife's Durango. There is some sway from crosswinds but nothing unsafe....even at 114mph

Ditto, i have 2500 freeway miles already and i drive during the day and night (mostly over 80) and i don't get no sway or anything so its very stable. Yes the car is tall, but it's very stable. I'm glad to say it is more stable then my EG hatch.

Yup, sounds like the salesman was giving you a line of Bs. I have no problems with mine. + it has a 5 star crash rating. Go drive one and decide for yourself, dont let a salesman make your decisions.

was the salesmen trying to sell you a heavier more expensive car???, there are plenty of other light and lighter weight and shittier built and taller cars on the roads, but how many times do you hear about a car being blown over sideways on the highway??

I think the salesman felt that your dad is willing to spend the cash on a more expensive car, that's why he suggested this idea of the Fit being unstable on the highway, but to me the Fit feels even more stable than a stock EG or EK even on stock suspension. Don't believe everything the salesman say, he works on a commission basis meaning, since the amount of commission on a Fit will be much less than say a Civic or Accord, it is obvious that he will try to upsell you. Trust your own judgement by taking the Fit on a high speed drive around the highways of the Auto Mall. Don't take this bs from the dishonest salesman. I assume the Fit is a pretty safe vehicle to drive with 7 airbags inside.
I notice that the salesmen at Richmond Honda like to BS or crack stupid jokes lol...
We were test driving the Sport Fit with paddle shifters... when he was introducing the paddle shifters, he was like "Yeah, the best part about these paddle shifters is that you can downshift while coming to a red light... you know... sounds so cool."
I giggled a bit

I have a 2001 Prelude its over 3000lbs and strong winds still blow it around I also had a truck that weighed over 4000lbs and same thing. It doesn't matter just dont drive stupid during a hurricane or whatever you guys have when you aren't near water.

Actually, the Honda Insight Hybrid ranks near the bottom according to a safety risk matrix that was released in April of this year. It is in the highest risk category.
The Insight ranks so low because it only comes with front airbags (no side or side curtains), has a relatively old body structure, is super lightweight, and relatively low to the ground.
I guess thats why Honda will stop producing the Insight after this year...

hi guys.
i already have 5000+ miles on my fit and about 80% of it is highway miles.
Compared to other cars i've driven on freeways, i'd have to say the Fit is definately more unstable on freeways.
The contributing factors could be the following:
1. Steep front surface area, the hood is very high and more wind "hits" it
2. Quick steering response, i've noticed that even the slightest gust of wind will change its direction
I realized that lowering the car and getting slightly wider tires/rims and changing the TOE IN/OUT (making the front tire toes more like this / \ Angle might fix the Fit's stance at higher speeds.
i'm no expert on cars, but this is my reasoning based on experience.

My honda jazz/fit, already run for more then 7000km of mileage. Usually i drove more then 100km/h up to 130km/h about 60 to 80miles/h. Got few occassion i drove up to 165km/h. I hav to say, the car very stable at straight, and if u happen want to push the car at tight coners or so, its very easy to predicts n drive. My Honda jazz/fit, came with Honda 2006 Factory fully kits with a cute spoiler. look exactly like in the picture below:
But if compare honda jazz with my honda stream, My honda stream can feel a little unstable if there any changes of winds while the speed around 100km/h n above. Overall Honda jazz is really recommended car, if u think about its features, Fuel economy and cheap maintainence... :D Aidos...

i'll tell you now, that if it was unsafe, it wouldn't be in the Honda dealers right now. Tell that salesman to suck a whales ***** and quit his day job.
haha what a load of ****.. my EG weighs less than a fit (EG - 2200lbs) and it's perfectly stable(havent tested past 120mph though)

Problem solved
