H22A4 with LSD. Life Span?
Okay, I've heard of LSDs going out in a very short amount of time. I'm planning to pick up an H22A4 from http://www.passwordjdm.com which comes with an LSD for $2600. Compared to the H22A4 that comes without an LSD for $2300. I was wondering what the average life span on an LSD was.
That is pretty expensive considering you can get a whole H22 swap with lsd tranny for that much. But I have had my lsd tranny for 3 years now with at least 80000 miles on it about 40000 of it was mine and hard miles to. The lsd has beed great however 3rd and 5th are gone.
Really? You think $2600 is a lot? Crap, I think I've been looking in the wrong places for a swap.
Oh yeah, I also heard that to keep the LSD living long, you have to buy the LSD additive from the honda dealership and add it into your oil when you change it. True? They said to buy the S2000 LSD additive. ::

Actually, the LSD is an Additional $300 on top of the $2200. But it comes with Axles. So that's a plus.

... just be sure to check the axles immideately upon reciving them. Mine were marked LSD on them. for further identification details do a search. I ordered the lsd tranny but got non lsd axles. they were very cooperative with the exchange and i think this is just an isolated incident but better safe than sorry.

ok to clear up some confusion:
there are 2 types of LSD's commonly used in honda transmissions. One is a clutch type (kaaz, ATS) and a gear type (OEM honda, Quaife). There do their jobs in different ways.
The clutch type LSD uses a pack of clutches to put power to the outside wheel. The friction material on these clutches will wear down over time and will need a rebuild periodically. The advantages of a clutch type is that they can be adjusted to engage much more agressively than a gear type, and don't suffer some of the performance drawbacks of the gear type--when one of the wheels is lifted off the ground (say after hitting the kerbs at a track) the gear type will interrupt its slip action and basically will be rendered ineffective.
a gear type uses helical gears (usually) to turn the outside wheels and is generally maintenance free (which is why quaife offers a lifetime warranty) and is a lot more "set it and forget it" which is ideal for a street car.
Since race cars have their trannies rebuilt pretty frequently, the maintenance issue on a clutch type isn't as big a deal, and you do have to run a special MTF for clutch types. for gear types, you can run any MTF that's within OEM spec and they tend to be very reliable.
i have a quaife in my lude. the password swap package is probably an h22 w/ the jdm M2B4 transmission which came from the factory with the OEM lsd.

There are 2 S- spec motors the Type - S (ATTS) and the Type SiR (LSD) both share the 11.1 motor compression. The intake will be the same. Check the door jam it will tell you the model if you cant see it then look at the engine and see where the oil filter is.. if it is in the normal position then its probably the SiR if its off to the side its probably the Type-S to accomidate for the ATTS unit. Both have the red valve cover.
