to be honest, I've yet to understand why the countershaft 1st gear is needed.
Hopefully someone more expereienced with B-series will be able to chime in here.

The following Honda parts are necessary to install ATS 4.928 final drive to US transmission unless your transmission is JDM Integra Type R 98 after with 4.78 final drive.
1st gear 23421-P80-E30
Distance collar 23914-P80-E30
Needle bearing 91107-P80-E31
</TD></TR></TABLE>
I did this swap a few years back, so my memory is a little fogged up....but I remember the shape of the first gear to be actually a little different. This was a question asked many years ago by resident guru sgT as he didn't understand why the need for a different 1st gear either.
Trust me on this. Unless you are using a different countershaft like from MFactory/Infinitude that takes into account where the 1st gear does not have to be changed. I would use the parts recommended.
If your tranny shop managed to get it to fit somehow, I would be wary of the results. Not quite square peg in round hole syndrome.... but don't be surprised if it doesn't work.

If Infinitude/MFactory says they need these pieces...then I'd bitch out whoever was installing that stuff and get them to do it right.
Most likely and this isn't downing any company specifically - reverse engineering is not difficult with today's casting, maching, CAD hardware.
So what they MIGHT (stepping on A LOT of toes now) have done was just model their final drive exactly to the ATS 4.929 unit...thus requiring the specific mentioned parts.
Bense, the differences are listed in the link I provided .... the 1st gear is meant to fit the specific countershaft in the 4.785/ATS/Infinitude,MFactory 4.929 setup.

The 1st gear on Honda ITR transmissions with the 4.785 FD uses a larger split bearing. So the bore of the 1st gear itself is larger, and you need to use the spacer collar and the split bearing to suit. I can only presume Honda felt the need for a larger bearing area with the lower FD. IIRC the spacer collar also acts as the shim in this case - another slight difference.

The helical cuts made into the Honda Integra B-series 4.785 final drive's countershaft go deeper than the transmission was originally designed for. So Honda turned the shaft down to 36.5mm, then put a collar over it so that the bearing wouldn't have to 'roll over' the cuts in the c/s 1st gear's bearing race. Here are some pictures from the internet that illustrate this. -- This becomes a topic of interest because of the desire for those that wish to run a h22 gearset in a 1st gen CR-V trans.
