Still having 91 overdrive problems
OUr 91 accord will still only lock up the torque converter on hot days... If it is below 80 outside it will go into 4th but never lockup. Someone suggested replacing the fluid with genuine honda fluid which i have done 4 times (per the honda tsb) and it's still the same. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Has the shift pressure cable been adjusted? Find the cable that goes from the throttle body to the front of the trans. loosen the cable so the pressure lever 'bottoms out' ; next adjust it tighter; so that with the engine running and you open the throttle with your hand, the pressure lever should just start to rise as the engine RPM increases.
Road test the adjustment, get rolling along so you are in 3rd gear and coasting, when above 25mph and you smash the gas pedal to the floor the trans should downshift to 2nd gear; when below 25mph and same condition the trans should drop to 1st gear.

I loosened the cable previously, forgot to mention that. I made sure that when the throttle was closed that the arm was bottomed out. The funny thing is that when its hot out it locks up the convertor but as soon as the temp outside drops below 80 it will not lockup or if it does it is only for a few miles and then it unlocks again.
I think you may have a coolant temp sensor issue.
Check the wiring of the sensors located below the distributor for damage or loose connections. Your gauge on the dash relies on a different sensor so it's indication doesn't mean much for this.
If the engine thinks the engine is cold it keeps it out of touqe converter lockup (it does not have overdrive) to let the engine up.
Good luck with it!

well it isnt too happy with the sensor unplugged. Before i go too far is it the 2 wire sensor under the distributor right behind the pencil sized sensor??? The 2 wire one was full of oil (too late to run and get some carb cleaner) but i assume that oil in the plug could cause a change in resistance since it is conductive. Does anyone have any idea what ohm reading this sensor produces??? Thanks.
i've been searching alot on here and also realized that we have the bouncing idle problem from time to time as well...it goes from about 850 to 1500 again and again when put in park sometimes...I bled the cooling system (minimal air). Before going to work for the railroad i worked at a nissan (sorry) dealership and while i never ran into a problem like this we had to raise the front of nissans 30 degrees or so to get all of the trapped air out...does this apply to hondas as well? It has no bleed bolt on the thermostat housing.
