Default transmission needs to be rebuilt

My cars been making a noise when driving in gear.

Its a clapping thud sound as the car goes faster the noise increases.

I took it to a shop which said its not worth it to rebuild because it would cost as much as a used tranny.

They said the problem with the tranny is the ring has lost teeth and everytime it rotates to where the missing teeth are it makes that thud sound and its been getting louder because because that missing tooth its breaking off more and more teeth.

so was wondering if anyone knows how much for a rebuild on a b16 tranny, or how much a used one in good bolt-on condition would be. dont care about the clutch mine is in good condition.

If the ring is missing teeth, then the countershaft is done too. Those two parts are $500 alone, and that is the average cost of a used tranny. There will be other damage because of the metal floating around in the transmission.

If the ring gear has been stripped of teeth, then it is most likely totaled. Think of the gear teeth acting like a rock crusher to the stray metal in your transmission. All of the ball bearings and roller bearings will be pitted and rough running.

Just fine another transmission. It'll cost a hell of a lot to fix the one you've got.
