Default JDM D15B into CRX

Hey, I'm looking to have a project this summer and I'm thinking of getting an old CRX SI and putting a D15B into it to make a fuel economy monster. Can somebody tell me the feasiblity of this project and tell me how crazy it sounds. I'm also wondering if I can reuse the CRX tranny since my engine shop has a nice deal on just the D15B motor w/o tranny. I have tools and a reasonable level of mechanical aptitude. Give me a good idea of what this might cost me in addition to the motor and tranny.
I love your site

Thanks,
Sloan

Yes it is a very easy and feasible project. I would try to find an HF tranny so that you can get good MPG. Price is going to vary and you can reuse your tranny.

im interested in this too...

i have a 1989 CRX SI and it needs a new engine, tranny, ecu, and well all of it..the shell is perfect..and all the wiring is there...

i heard these engines are peppy....close to a D16a6 or what?

also, how much wiring is involved...and would i be better off just getting the DOHC ZC....which would get better milage (approx. here) and which is more reliable....which would be cheaper (installation, product, and material)

the biggest thing is reliability and practicality...

i want it an easy swap and to run great...

anyone that has the d15b please comment...and people with the zc...

i just did the d15b swap about 3 months ago and i love it. it cost me a total of approx. 1200-1400 dollars, but i put a brand new clutch and flywheel, timing belt, water pump, cam seal, crank seal, rear main seal, valve cover gasket, cap and rotor, and plugs. it runs great for a daily driver and gets 32-35 mph with a si trans. i reused my stock tranny and got a harness from rywire.( for them). if your looking for some serious power, look else where. but if you want a reliable daily driver thats rather peppy, id recommend it.

ans some eye candy

I love the D15b, i keep up with my friends B18 until 4th gear, damn his GSR tranny. Good gas mileage and only cost me about $450 Only thing u really have to do is either convert to OBD1 or get an OBD0 dizzy and hack the mounts to fit the head and chip your ecu for vtec.

sorry to bring this question up again, but are there anything about a first gen crx that would make this swap especially difficult?

Yea the D15B in tthe crx is feasible. I am running my on a p28 and it runs nice. Just rewire the distributor and use a crx tranny. also get the odb conversion harness. I bought mine from jdmshit.com.

fyi it would run better and get better milage with a p08. unless you have a p28 chipped with p08 timing and fuel maps

sounds awesome! though when I goto jdmshit.com the 0-1 conversion harness is only for 88 year and up and I have an 87. is there anything i should search for to get more information? the engine i'm looking at includes the stock ECU. is the P08 the stock ECU for the D15B? Sorry for being a newb but thanks again for the prompt replies.

Even though I drive an accord, I love EF's. And threads like this are why there are many alot of options, plus its cheap which is what i like since I'm one cheap ****.

The P08 is the stock ECU for the JDM D15B VTEC motor. Being that you're talking about a First Generation CRX, you've got a little more work to get the motor in there, but I know very little about that.

i have the same swap... i get an easy 37 mpg & 40 (when i baby it) on 93... w/ this motor u get much better mpg when u run 93

but i do have one question... what are u guys idleing at? my idle is REDICULOUSLY low... i mean could be 200 rpm... i am constantly afraid of stalling... its practicly on the bottom line well below the 500 mark...

also i have a wire that is cut from my thermostat sensor & dont know where it goes... i cant find anyother wire, but where would it go... i
m pretty sure it has to do w/ my fan, cuz it doesn't turn on

You guys need to both adjust the idle screw (flathead screw on the top of the throttle body) and clean your IAC motor, the big valve body on the back of the intake manifold that has two hoses going into it from the bottom. Remove it, clean it. Replace it if the rubber looks cracked. Use hondabond and make a new gasket for it. Your idle should be perfect after that. (barring any bad programming you may have done)
