Default Intake Manifold Gasket

Recently traded in my 03 RSX Type S for an 06 S2000. I see that Hondata makes an intake manifold gasket for the AP1, but not the AP2. A company called Nextgear does make an IMG for the AP2, however. Is an IMG even an effective mod for the S, as it is for the DC5?

for the price of it it's worth it.... however, for the time you spend installing it, it's not worth it...

It's a solid mod, but really worth it if you're F/I.

The Hondata IMG will fit the AP2. Not sure about the '06 however, since there were several under the hood changes including, IIRC, no air pump. For '00-'05 cars, the air pump control valve is attached to the intake manifold and has a passage that goes from the intake side of the head to the exhaust side. That change alone would also probably effect the NextGear IMG...I would check if I were you. Since your '06 may not have that passage, there may be an extra hole in the IMG...which may not be a problem.

Is the IMG worth it? IMO, yes. Heat soak is a major problem on the S2k, and any mod that can help reduce heat soak is worth it. The IMG doesn't give you more power...but it helps you keep the power you have.

It is a major pain in the butt to install however.

Looks like there would be quite a few holes, not just one. Wouldn't that mess with the A/F ratio? Would the ECU adjust?

Yeah, but the only holes that matter for the IMG are those that mate from the manifold to the head. The vac hoses and air temp sensor don't mate between the head and manifold.

IIRC, on the '00-'05 the holes that mate between the head and manifold are the intake ports, a large coolant port, a small coolant port, air pump port and of course the head bolts. The only one I've heard about that may have changed for '06 is the air pump.

Gotcha...and that can always be siliconed. Thanks for the advice...what do you recommend as for basic mods? I don't want to go FI. Currently have a gutted airbox, and trying to find out if a snorkel is worth it. Too many bad stories of CAI hydrolock on s2ki, plus why spend the money when you can get the same gains for free?

I like DIY-type things, so I'd even like to make my own snorkel. Since I have an 06, I'm thinking about a Hondata reflash with Toda header and a Spugen single exhaust. I doubt that I/H/E/Reflash on the S can make the kind of gains it did on the DC5 though.

That's what you're limited to, unfortunately, until more support is available from the aftermarket.

Maybe high temp silicone...or might be able to get away with leaving it. Since Hondata has obviously been messing with the '06, they would be the best folks to ask if the gasket is OK for your car.

I heard a rumor that some snorkles will not fit the AP2 due to a bar being in the way. Not sure if that is true. Snorkles seem to be a cheap way to get cooler air in the box. If you can make one...do it. I've seen several home-made snorkle type divices on s2ki. Otherwise you may have to wait for Comptech to make an '06+ intake if you live in an area where water ingestion might be a problem for the AEM/INJEN style.

If I had an '06, I'd probably do the header + re-flash. Note that the toda header has no heatshield and dumps a lot of heat in the engine bay. I had my toda jet-hot coated and fabricated an insulated heatsheild that attaches to the battery heatshield to get temps back to normal.

Note that the exhaust is also a problem on the '06...you will have to get a muffler shop to make a slight bend mod to get an '00-05 exhaust to work (so don't go full Ti yet). Spugen's are low cost, but not sure they show gains other than sound. If a single is what you are after, T1R is my recommendation...70mm for max hp. Just make sure you get the stainless rather than the new full Ti or the pipe shop won't be able to easily bend it.

Other mods you can do now: reduce some weight...lighter Volk CE28N wheels are a common choice that come in the s2k's unusual offset...they will reduce unsprung weight and rotational mass.

The gasket is worth the install if you have heat problems, especially driving in stop and go traffic and get bogging/bucking.

Read up on S2KI for install tips - I've done over a dozen S2000 gaskets, we just did Negcamber's and another's - 2 gaskets in 5 hours.

Yeah, the 06 exhaust is straight back from the cat, the 04-05s had a few bends, so I'd need to get those bent out. The Amuse T1R is very nice, it's just hard to bring myself to spend so much on such minimal gains. Spoon N1 is my favorite sounding exhaust though. Makes it sound like a bike

As far as a bar getting in the way of the snorkel, there's nothing I can see. I just checked again and I don't see it. Anything can be fabricated anyway.

I'll have to look into the jet-hot coating, as I know the S2000 has major heat-soak. Even my shift **** and footwell gets hot after about 20 minutes of driving, and that's not even driving hard. I drive in traffic a lot and it does bog. I don't think I'd be able to commute with an AP1.

Amuse? There are a couple nice Amuse singles that are big money ($2k+)...but the T1R is half that:

And it looks like there is a snorkle for the ap2:

Ah...I was thinking of the Titan. Thanks for all your help, bro...anytime you're out in Maryland, give me a holler.

EDIT: also, when do they take off this damn trial status?

Yeah...the Amuse Extra Titan is an excellet single for the car. Very very light...not too loud...little drone...but VERY expensive.

You need to hook up with the Delaware S2ki group:

http://www.s2ki.com/forums/ind...um=65

Twice a year the east coasters head over to the Tail of the Dragon (318 turns in 11 miles) for an S2k romp. The NY and DE folks always have a caravan. One of the best S2k mechanics around (Billman) is in NY and usually leads a caravan...he's a good person to know in your area.

So the Hondata IMG prevents heat transfer from the head to the intake manifold as well as blocking off the coolant entry to the intake manifold?
