help!! paint wont stick to wheel
I use the air craft stripper to strip the paint from my wheels then I spray paint it using dupicolor wheel paint and the paint wont stick, and turns powdery....HELP PLEASE!!! this is the second time this happened to me and first time it happened i thought it was bad paint! HELP!!
so i have to have to put primer ??? can i just wash with soap sand and then paint and it would stick well? i hate this i spent the whole day strippping off the old paint and cleaning and stuff and paint it and turns into powder/doesnt stick
!!
!!
1) Remove all the clear coat from rim
2) Scuff with scotch brite or some type of fine sand paper.
3) spray with one coat of primer.
4) spray with color you choosed
5) wait till paint is completly dry and spray with clear coat . I did 2 coats of light clear and rims held up good. Hope this helps you.
I tried painting my rims as you described without using primer before i painted and i could not get the paint to stick right.
after you paint stick them in a sunny area and they will dry alot faster.

ok thanks guys, i painted my wheels before but just painted them straight on oem wheels so thats why the paint stuck but this time i used the aircraft stripper so i guess it didnt stick. Thank guys for helping
After sanding and scuffing with 3M Red pad, use some Wax and Tar Remover (available at auto parts store in paint section) before priming/painting/clearing.
Trust me, I've painted many many wheels and learned from my father who has his own paint and body biz.

I finally got the Duplicolor graphite to work today - I had bad paint for sure last time (I posted in your other thread in the wheels forum)
My advice (besides returning the paint to the parts store and getting 2 new cans
Autozone refunded my $$ no questions asked):
1) make sure the surface is 100% clean
2) use self-etching metal primer. Duplicolor makes it. its green. its thin. you'll need a good bit of it to get full coverage. this is what you need to use for bare aluminum.
3) Follow with regular primer
4) Hit it with the graphite - follow the instructions and recoat every ~10 mins (5 is actually ok). Follow with clear immediately If you don't, you have to wait almost a week to let the paint cure fully in order to add a new coat. they aren't shitting you about that in the instructions - something about the way it cures makes it very resistant to stick if you let it dry too much longer than an hour.

I just painted some OEM rims. I used aircraft stripper on one. And it did the same thing on that one. Its the aircraft stripper. Ur gonna need to sand them down now. Make sure and prime them as well

I already told him to use the 3M Red Pad... no S.O.S.
And using the self etching primer is what I meant to say... on bare aluminum you WILL need a harsh primer.

No, what i think is wrong is the duplicolor paint. They are effing it up man and its pissing me off. This is not the first time it happened to me using their paint. I live in Houston texas and this is the 4th different store i bought a wheel paint from and it all came out horrible. Its like the paint is powder or something. I even complained to duplicolor themselves yet i have gotten no responce and that was a month ago
my rims are ruined now... i dont have time or energy to go look for "working" paint and stip and paint my rims again...what should i do besides going and returning the paint???
but what i dont get is that i painted my rims before and all i did was clean my factory rims and just painted them andit came out beautiful....this time i used aircraft remover to remove the old paint then sanded it down and then use primer finally painted and clear coated it. It was like all powder and just looks like crap
Well, either the paint is bad or the surface is not prepared right. There could very well be residue left over from the aircraft remover. Try washing it very thoroughly with paint thinner before you prime.
Also, how far away did you hold the can when you sprayed it??

If your Duplicolor Graphite wheel paint is coming out powdery, you are holding the spray can too far away from the wheel...
I've had very good results from this paint.

thanks guys i was actually thinking of getting them powdercoated for my bday
. Do you think i can get it done for 100 bucks for just flat black powdercoat (glossy)???

flat black is what its name says it is - flat. The opposite of gloss
Most wheel refinishers charge ~$100 per wheel since they strip it down to bare metal and then start fresh. Maybe a local shop that does powdercoat could do it for less if you do some prep work on your own.
When you can get well-made 16" aftermarket wheels for $125-$200 each though (from Enkei, A-Tech, Rota, etc.), you really have to ask yourself if its worth it.
if it was really $100 for all 4, it'd be worth it I guess

Yes, I have painted 3 sets of wheels using this paint... it comes out of the can in the air looking like powder but that is because there is so much metal flake in it.
