Mini Me!!!
I finally finished my mini me swap (sohc zc + d16y8 head) everything went well but after it ran for about 10 min. when you rev it up there was a knocking sound coming from the motor, not sure if I have to retard the timing or my bottom end is going to give out. It never knowcked before the swap. does anyone know what to set my timing at? has anyone had this problem before, do you think i will be fine, or is it time to rebuild everything. the bottom end only has about 65,000 miles on it. before the swap it was very strong. now it is knocking but it doesnt knock at idle just when i rev it up a little. any help?
Do timing. I dont know what to set it at. If it still knocks buyy the NOS brand octane booster and see if it still knocks if it does prolly too high of CR so put a Thinker head gasket on or put two of the same one.
It's not going to ping in low load situations.
You sure the head is in OK condition? Make sure the valves are adjusted properly and that all of the adjustment nuts are tight.
Where is the sound coming from? You /did/ refill the motor with oil, right?

Hey thanks, I did put oil back in it, i did adjust the valves and everything is perfect. would having the timing off or too far advanced cause it too knock. I am running high test gas in it. I just dont understand why it is knocking know but it didnt before the swap. Im just worried about driving it.

Incorrect timing won't cause any sort of knocking (car will just run like crap)... unless of course yoru cam timing is out far enough to make the valves hit the pistons!
Did you leave a socket or some extra change in one of the cylinders before you put the head back on ?

Ya I wouldnt drive it till knocking is fixed. How loud is it? Your timing will make engine knock even with no load if it is really far off. Did you use the right distro for your engine???
Did you wire it right for the MPFI???

Maybe your head when attached to your block outs the head too close to the block so the valves tapp the top of pistons. Pull the plugs and ground them then crank over engine and get a buddy to hear if there is knoking. If there is then you know it isnt fuel/air /timing related. If your valves are hitting your pistons put another head gasket on.

top dead center is good, i dont think the valves are hitting the pistons because it is quiet at idle and smooth, but after it has warmed up when you give it some gas there is a faint knocking sound that comes from the engine. It doesnt do it all the time but im thinking it could get worse. Im going to play with it tommorow and see what happens. Thanks for all your help
Have you checked clearances and all measurements to make sure that the valves won't hit the top of the piston? You do know that when it hits vtec the valves come down farther. You might have to have have the pistons machined so that the valves seat properly. I am doing a similar swap with d16a6 block & d16z6, but i am interested in using a sohc zc block, will it bolt to a d16z6 head?
