Default Timing Light questions

I have an old school Snap on analog timing light and I am not sure how to tell what my timing is on my accord. There are 3 notches on my crank pully - one by itself and about 1/2" away there are 3 close together. Which one do I line up on the mark to check my timing? What should it be set at? If I put the notch on the middle of the three marks my timing light tells me zero degrees advanced. Is that correct? how do you know if it's retarted then??? ugh..tell me how to do this!

Thanks

the middle one of the 3 is normal timing

the outside one is advanced 2 degrees
and the inner one is retarded 2 degrees

0 degrees advanced would be normal timing...(i dunno what this is on accords)

The middle one of the three is 15 degrees advance. The other are +/-2.

The one by itself is top dead center.

You need the 15 degree advance with the service connector jumpered out and at <700 rpm.

bringing this back from the dead...

i know its a noob question, i usually get my timing done at a shop cause i was too cheap to buy my own t-light till now.

so far i know its the middle of the 3 notches that has to be aligned with the pointer correct???

but on the haynes manual it says "15 deg. BTDC (red) at 650-750 rpm."

what my question is what they mean by "red" cause none of my marks are "red" i have a old sears inductive light. with the little turn **** of degrees on the back...

thanks.

once upon a time..long ago....in a land far, far away...the middle notch[Degree mark] of the group of 3 was red, and the single notch[ TDC] all by it's lonesome was white.

If you want to set it to stock timing, set it at zero & adjust it to the center (bigger) notch in the group of 3. Sound like you set yours to 2 deg. advanced from stock. That's OK if that's what you wanted.

If your stock timing is for example 16 deg., then you could set the dial to 16 & line up the single TDC notch. That's what I meant.
