B16a Transmission Determination-How do I tell?
Hey guys. I did a search, but found nothing. How do I check which tranny I have on my B16a, and what are the pros/cons of each?
Thanks,

There should be a small gold sticker on the front of the tranny. It will say J1, S1 and so on. There are USDM and JDM versions of the S1, Y1, and YS1 transmissions, so be careful of not getting shortchanged. The JDM S1 and J1 have tight ratios, and the YS1 has an optional LSD and pretty good gearing as well. Most will say that the S1 and J1 trannies aren't to great for highway driving and won't give you great gas mileage.
Where would the sticker be when the tranny is already on the car? When looking down there, the only stamp/sticker I see is the
B16A
1031097
Once on the car, is the sticker under, on top (next to the plate), to the left, right, etc. of the engine bay?

Looking at your engine from the front of the car, the sticker should be right near where the tranny bolts to the block. It should be next to that plate(left) on the block that says B16A 1xxxxx. All the B16A's that I have seen with cable trannies, had this sticker in that vicinity. If it's not there, then maybe it fell off or got peeled off.
Yeah, I have heard of that before. If the sticker isn't on it though, how can I tell? Is there an RPM test I can do (Say like 4k at 60 on the freeway) or something?

How ironic, I just got a B16 tranny, and it had no sticker on it. I'm assuming it's a S1 or J1, as that is what I was told by Steve at Honda Motors Online (where I got it from). All I really know is that it's cable, has an electronic VSS, open diff, and it's a small shaft.

check out my B-series tranny guide here:

I have the info on the J1/Y1/and S1 cable b16a tranny's. I did each test at 4000rpm and took note of the MPH's. Sorry about the KM but all of my ffriends cars had a JDM gauge cluster, but if you look below you'll see i have a KM to MPH converter/calculator..
Take note of yours and match it up to my list..
hth..
Thanks for the help. I was able to determine really easy which one I had, and it explained a lot of things. I have a question though.. I though the lower the number, the shorter the gears? The Y1 seems to have shorter gears, why isn't is the top pick for trannies, because of the final drive? Would it be better for dragging than say the S1/J1?
JB- Who now knows he has a S1 tranny, which explains the crappy gas mileage and short gears

It's the other way around for gear specs. The higher the number or teeth count, the shorter the gear ratio will be. The final drive is like the catalytic converter that each (1-5th) gear goes through and affects total gearing acceleration.
The S1 tranny you have is a good one for track and drag racing. The Y1 has shorter gears but a longer final drive ...yet, is the only pre-92 cable tranny that comes with LSD. The YS1 would be the next steup up from a Y1, which is a 92-93 cable b-series tranny. The YS1 JDM version sometimes come with an LSD and the gear ratios are exactly like 92+ B16A gears and 96-97 ITR gears.

Open differential? Like no bar in the center? Mt friend you just have yourself a YS1 with an LSD......nice
. But that was the first thing I looked for, hoping that I'd get lucky.
